Re: Declutter 2024: What Have You Purged Today?

[ Edited ]

@rnmom @nwbabs Totally adding my support for @rnmom 's bounderies on hubby's mom's stuff for relative...glad you gave it a quick deadline to "take it or leave it!" As @nwbabs gave an example of, I could totally see that turning into a "holding pattern" for them only to procrastinate taking it and eventually deciding, "oh, you can toss it, we don't need it." Nope...NOW or never. Good on you!

Gotta be done. Every time I read someone's posts about emptying a family home, I go back there in my head when I  did it before selling mom's. It is an overwhelming project, with layers and layers of decisions and emotions that just unearth themselves, in one huge project. It gets BIGger before it gets smaller. In my case, no siblings, and just me to deal with, and give my OWN bounderies to...and that was hard enough. I can understand how it happens, with your husband...just trying to do the best with everyone involved and with "the stuff", not wanting things to go to waste if someone can use it. But he's closer to the situation... @rnmom he needs a more impartial person to help him set those limits too.

@nwbabs  ps. on another topic...good job figuring out how to streamline the towel system!

Re: Declutter 2024: What Have You Purged Today?

I've really not purged much in the past month.  Vacation, several appts, life.  I commend all of you for staying on track.  My sister took 3 boxes to a free shredding event this past Saturday, sponsored by a local representative.  I need to definitely do some paperwork filing this week.  Good to read everyone's progress.

@rnmom Good for you on setting boundaries!  I get it.

Re: Declutter 2024: What Have You Purged Today?

Finally. I got rid of a couple things, lol. My gas-powered pressure washer that quit working last year and my propane B-B-Q grill that was on my 2nd story deck. I mentioned on the local town page that I needed them gone and someone came right over to get them, lol. Other than that, it's been the usual holey sock here, worn out kitchen towel there type of stuff. You are all doing great, so much progress!

Re: Declutter 2024: What Have You Purged Today?

My sister in law did come by and pick up some things hubby had here for her so I was happy about that. One big thing out of our pole barn and 5 things from out of the garage.

Re: Declutter 2024: What Have You Purged Today?

Let's see, I have done a bit of shredding/filing and did dump the shredder. Tossed a dish rag and a pair of my son's tennis shoes.

I set aside to donate a small tackle box and an old comforter that I want to get to a local animal rescue group. I need to get my donations out soon, they are starting to bug me. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

Re: Declutter 2024: What Have You Purged Today?

Finally, I have read your latest posts. Good work to everyone who keeps chipping away at our excess!👏

Honestly, I think I might be developing adult onset ADD. I come to the Home forum and all of a sudden I feel compelled to check the DJIA, or look at my emails or answer that text. I think I need to become more disciplined about my time maybe even scheduling tasks by incremental periods of time.

@rnmom  I'm so happy to hear your sister-in-law has relieved you of storing her things. Sometimes just the mere thought of "excess baggage" can weigh on us even if it is somewhat out of sight.

I am going to try to adopt your methodology for getting rid of things. It seems if you see something you take care of it right then and there. I, on the other hand, have to make an event out of it--setting aside a chunk of time to address the task. But I am really good with mail. I immediately discard any "junk mail"--it is all the other stuff that can accumulate.☹️

@nwbabs Good job on the towels! I recently did the same thing--going through all my bathroom towels only keeping the cream of the crop. Now I also went through kitchen towels again keeping only those in great condition.  My favorite kitchen dishtowels are from Anthropologie and I need to get more. Last time I looked online they were out of stock at my local store. I hope they are back soon.

@amyb It is comforting to hear someone else keeps a filing system (grandma-style said in the most loving way) just like me! I totally get that it is overkill, takes up space and is  time-consuming, but I like the security of knowing if I had to refer to a past bill it would be right there. I'm the same way with receipts. I have a whole system for filing store receipts. You wanna see my grocery receipts since the beginning of the year? No problem.😱

Well now I better go clean out my dresser drawers because I am hosting a dinner next week. My sister just asked me the other day, "remember when you used to clean your dresser drawers because you were having company?" I didn't tell her that still happens!

Re: Declutter 2024: What Have You Purged Today?

Thanks for the tip on Anthropologie dish towels @magicmoodz. The types of pumpkins/squashes dish towel is adorable and they have so many other patterns. I had no idea, call me clueless. Seems I replace my dish towels more frequently than bath towels. Go figure.

Had to chuckle about cleaning your dresser drawers with company coming for dinner. You are an inspiration!

Re: Declutter 2024: What Have You Purged Today?

Been boxing up unused kitchen stuff to take to  the garage and was going to do more today--but it is raining pigs and chickens here in near Seattle---and I mean raining hard all of a sudden!!! so the box brigade will be stacked up in my livingroom for awhile.
