Re: Declutter 2023: What have you purged today?

Yesterday I purged one bin of holiday items.  Wrapped and boxed for fall giveaway.  Down one more bin and was my goal.

I read on here purging 27 items.  Last month I purged using the 12 days of Christmas theme.  I purged more than 12 but I hit 12 spaces.  My own game for me.

This month I am going to purge at least one item a day.  I got just the drawer to hit too.

Happy New Year.

[ Edited ]

Well...still feeling low energy and getting over this bug...but I'm so antsy to start refreshing my home...so...

I watched a few YouTube Declutter videos and got a tiny bit motivated to just "set the timer" for 10 minutes and do "SOMETHING."

Tossed some old cosmetics.

Straightened up the mess of "sickness" that my bedroom has become. Will be changing sheets. Airing out bedroom.

Have a book ready to donate...lol...yes "A" book. (mostly my books have been recently gone through, but this one was borrowed and given back to me)...will donate to my library and do another pass over my bookshelves before then.

All the holiday and fall catalogs are in the recycle ready to go out with the garbage.

Went through the fridge...tossed old opened jars, and leftovers, cleaned some new produce that needed trimming so it's ready to use.

Now I'm already pooped and back on the couch. I'll set the timer and see what I can do again later. I know my desk is a mess, mail needs to be opened and caught up on..

Oh also...I am donating my old Farberware electric coffee maker...never liked the way coffee came in it...so I'll start my 2023 donate bag with this.

It's a start.

For someone recovering from an illness, you did great @amyb .

Today I got rid of six Christmas ornaments that had lost their luster.

Re: Declutter 2023: What have you purged today?

Day 2 - It was busy day with family member visiting so I wasn't home very much but I told myself that when I got home I needed to take 15 minutes to declutter! I decided to take on a box of random items. I easily reached my 27 items to throw out just going through that box and the top of my bedroom dresser. It feels good cleaning out that box since it was something I saw every day. It was actually quite surprising what I could do in 15 minutes so there isn't really legit excuse of "I don't have time". Any amount such as 15 minutes can make an improvement! Tomorrow is garbage pickup day so it was nice to take a full bag of junk outside right away so I couldn't debate about any of the items.

Re: Declutter 2023: What have you purged today?

Today, I gave away a crockpot and glassware that I didn’t like.  That crockpot survived so many declutters but I have yet to use it.  It was a small one. It was time for it to go.  I organized a bit today too.  While it is not a big difference, I can tell.  However, made me realize I have a long way to go, and that I really need to make an effort to get rid of things and not just organize. .

This really strengtens my goal  this year of stopping the impulse spending if I can keep up with the momentum.

Re: Declutter 2023: What have you purged today?

Hello all. Happy New Decluttering Year! Wonderful to see so many are doing so great already!

Thanks for starting the thread again, @rnmom.

I have been away from the thread for a while, and haven't really gotten any purging done either.
I was planning a trip to another state over the Christmas holiday, but the horrible winter storm made me cancel my flight, so I was left with nothing to do. You'd think that was the perfect time to do some serious decluttering work, right? No, no it wasn't, lol.

But, I have started small, with just a few things. I did take an entire carload of cardboard to recycle from my daughter's house, does that count? Haha

I have been sorting paperwork, some went to trash, some went to recycling, and a big stack remains to be shredded, ugh. Pray for my shredder to hold up.

I have been the "keeper of my parent's/grandparent's important documents" since my mother passed long ago. I have been toying with the idea of passing that on to one particular niece, for a couple of years and decided yesterday that it was time to do so. Neither of my girls really wanted that "responsibility", and this niece has done some family research so she was the logical choice. Today I asked her if she would like to have this material, she's coming in the morning to pick it up. She was really pleased. So that is a drawer in the file cabinet mostly cleaned out in one fell swoop. I took time today to look through and make copies of just a small number of things to keep.

Unfortunately, I still have a few more drawers to go through in the file cabinet of my own papers, to get done with this onerous job, then I can move on to something that will move along quicker.

"To each their own, in all things".

Re: Declutter 2023: What have you purged today?

I did a thorough cleaning/decluttering/rearranging of my bedroom today. It wasn't a plan. I was folding and putting laundry away and it just happened. I had a lot of stuff that I was holding onto intending to donate it but that never happened. So it kept growing. We don't have the usual charities to donate to and the bigger places in Boston don't take dropp off stuff. You have to make an appointment. And where do you park while you lug multiple big bags to some place you are not familiar with? My niece and I tossed it all in the dumpster. It's gone and I feel great! This is one and done for me. I'm not a horder and I'm not an unorganized, messy person. I was just holding on to stuff with good intentions but reality set in and now I'm free.

Re: Declutter 2023: What have you purged today?

@amyb - I think it sounds like you did a lot too! I know you're anxious to get your house back in order but don't overdo it!

I hurt my back a couple of weeks ago and I keep working around the house and I just can't get back to normal and not hurting. A lot of the stuff I just have to do because it's regular cleaning/picking up but it's still tempting to do more because I want to organize and declutter too.

@chrystaltree - Sometimes you just have to give yourself amnesty when getting rid of stuff. It's great to donate, and I do when I can too, but if it's that cumbersome to do so, sometimes you just have to get stuff out of your house! I'm glad you feel so good!
