Re: Declutter 2021: What have you purged today?

We buy things that we do not really need for our 'imaginary' life ! I have bought Fiesta dinner ware like a true fiend !!  Since Covid struck I have added more to my hoard. We DO NOT entertain any more. So why would I need 34 dinner plates in various colors and MANY assorted bowls, platters etc ? So I have been currating the collection. I haul it out...admire it a little then pack it up and donate. I am now down to less than a quarter of my previous stash. Reading this forum has given me the guts to admit that I do not NEED this amount of dinner ware ! Oh I still LOVE dishes ! But now my motto is  "admire but do not acquire !" Thank you everyone in this group ! Here's to next year and more thinning of the 'herd'. Bless you all !!  HeartHeartHeart

I don't know what to do. I used to "do" every holiday for the family. So I bought 12 complete Lenox dinnerware sets and all the assorted dishes for Christmas. Since Covid we have not even seen much less ate with my husband's brother and family in almost 2 years.

I doubt we will ever get together like we used to. Now what do I do with all those dishes? I still like the dishes but if I am honest the dishes will probably never be used. Sadly by the time I got all the pieces the dishes have never been used.

Should donate but still wish we would have a family Christmas dinner again in the future.

@drizzellla - thought it's hard, sometimesI think it's best to just move the things out to someone who will use them and move on from them.

@drizzellla

I wouldn't rush into ridding myself of those dishes just yet.  You might not use them for another year or two, but if in the future you're able to have gatherings again, wouldn't you want to use those dishes?

If so, just keep them for now.  If you're sure you won't use them, find a good home for them.  Perhaps a family member might want them.  Or maybe sell them.

Be patient and keep the faith.  You can always donate them at a later date.  But they'll be hard to replace if you do want to have dinners again at some point.

@geezerette

You are right. I looked on Replacements and it is a popular pattern. But I have so many dishes that to ship them would cost a fortune.

The thing that bugs me is the dishes take up most of the space in my china cabinet. I have never used them and it looks like I never will.

I will keep looking but no immediate family member has any interest in china. I will expand my search.

@drizzellla - I agree with @geezerette . I wouldn't rush into getting rid of the dishes if you still might have gatherings in the future.

Re: Declutter 2021: What have you purged today?

Fridge purge for trash collection today.

Out with the "oldies and goodies". For the first time in 18 months I indulged over the past week. Got to get back on my program. The fridge was full but nothing to eat.

Next week it will be the much needed semi-annual Pantry Purge.

Also tossed 2 pairs of casual pants into the Donate bag this week.

Happy, decluttered New Year to all!

Re: Declutter 2021: What have you purged today?

After sleeping only 1 /1/2 hours last night due to bad weather in our area, my final walk thru was at 8 this morning. I got there at 7:45, in the dark, with torrential rain. Builder and his assistant were already there.

Closing was at 9 and it went fine. Then my realtor and I went back to the house and did something with the locks that changed it from the builders master key to my new keys, which was wonderful.  No locksmith needed. No trip to Home Depot for extra keys.

I unloaded my car and then went home and loaded it up again and my sister and nephew came and we went for lunch close by and then went to the house and unloaded the car again.  My nephew cleaned all of the vinyl plank flooring while my sister and I worked on the master bedroom closet.

Master bedroom closet is completely done.  They went home, I came home, took a Tylenol and did a swan dive into the recliner. I am so tired.  I seriously might go to bed soon.  I have got to get some sleep tonight.  Fortunately, it has stopped raining.

Best Buy comes tomorrow between 7 and 11 with the refrigerator and washer and dryer.  I'll take another load over there then and my sister will come back late morning to help.  My nephew flies home tomorrow morning.

It all went perfectly today but it feels so weird to be putting my things in a different house.  I didn't get sad or cry though, moving my things or at the closing.  It just all felt/feels surreal. Huge step for me as I try to right the ship and start this new chapter of my life and try to find some contentment or happiness again.

Re: Declutter 2021: What have you purged today?

Mary Engelbreit calendars were my weakness and I have kept at least 15 because of their pictures or sayings.  I am tearing out just a few pages and promise to get them out of house - with a heavy heart.

Those of you who are teachers understand the tendency to keep things that can be used in classroom.  As a foreign language teacher I looked for authentic things - maps, ouctures, menus.   Oh I hate to part with so man e of those today, knowing how I hunted for them.
