Oh, my goodness.  The "Hooked on Houses" blogger has brought us pictures of Doris's sunny home in Carmel-by-the-sea, plus a video walk-through prior to the auction of her things in April.  I can only imagine the live auction will be postponed until safer times, but how lucky are we to get this preview and glimpse of her house!

Is this not EXACTLY how you picture Doris' house?    The sunny yellow walls, the animals of course, bright flowers, practical, unpretentious touches like the stone floor and the collection of brooms and whisks!

Oh you'll go mad enjoying the video tour-- it all looks so much like "her".    So much of interest, like Tony Bennett's artwork for her, and Rock Hudson's gift of a brass planter from Africa, with entwined elephants all around it.  And her son Terry Melcher's gift of a red lacquer piano...

I love her light-filled, unpretentious dining room:

I'm a 'dusty' kind of Summer, "seasonally" speaking, but I've always pegged Doris as a vibrant "Spring", and the cheerful brights, the yellows and reds of her decor, kind of confirm it for me.  Even down to her favorite field flowers, especially the gallant daisy that she loved...

Wait till you see the views.

Here's the video tour of her house:

And here's the piece in "Hooked on Houses" that shows many more incredibly fun still pictures:

Re: DORIS DAY'S HOUSE IN CARMEL

[ Edited ]

Thanks for this post. I as others loved Doris Day. I suggest going to the website you suggested, Hooked On Houses, and bypass the youtube link.

The narrator, Martin Nolan is a little too much and is repeated. Says it susposed to be 9+minutes, but it actually just goes back to the beginning. I'm sure this auction is postponed.

Perhaps the auction will be online only.

Re: DORIS DAY'S HOUSE IN CARMEL

Oh, Oznell, thank you for uplifting my day!  It looks so much like her, you can see her in every room.  What a cheerful. bright, and very personal home!  It makes me a little sad since she had only one grandson and he will not have the opportunity of having anything belonging to his grandmother.  He is a very successful real estate agent in California.  She had nothing to do with him once her son Terry died.  She didn't even attend Terry's funeral.  Oh well, we are all different.

I will go to take a look at the auction catalogue, so many lovely items.

Re: DORIS DAY'S HOUSE IN CARMEL

Thanks @roster ,  the video was linked within "Hooked on Houses" article, and I personally believe it's well worth it, if for the views of the outside alone!  Those grounds and the golf course stretching away to the Pacific-- they aren't really captured in the still photos.

There's a lot to see there-- how fun would it be to have an in-person tour, before all the artifacts of Doris' life are dismantled and sold...

Oh, how interesting, @Somertime ,  I didn't know that about the family "dynamic".  That is unfortunate, as you say.  So glad you enjoyed the house!

Re: DORIS DAY'S HOUSE IN CARMEL

She was one of my favorites so I really enjoyed the video and pictures.  Her home was lovely, she must have truly enjoyed her years there.  Carmel by the Sea is a beautiful place and hers is the perfect home.  Thanks for sharing @Oznell
