years ago when we moved into our home, the stone fireplace was very discolored in places.
we scrubbed it with soapy water and then rubbed a broken piece of brick over the discolored stones: it transferred a rusty or pinkish cast. Then we painted the grout a creamy light yellow.
Forty years and many fires later, it's still attractive.

What a romatic tale of a fireplace!! All it takes is love. Well, a little belief in your creativity, potential, and the magic will happen.
