@MildredM   Ok now you have clarified some things.  Obviously your home is not falling apart around you and it sounds like what is needed is interior remodeling and renovations.  Also seems there are still some original existing homes in your neighborhood.

 

Then I say just do it.  I don't know what to advise to get your husband on board but if you start making contacts.gathering information and floor plans then present it to him may be he will be more forthcoming.

When ever I do an update or repair to the house, I consider it an investment in me and what I like. Not re sale value. It is what makes me happy and enjoy my home more.
