Corian for tub surround shower walls

I am having my bathroom remodeled and I'm finding it's not an easy (or inexpensive) task.  I had my old cultured marble from the early 1970s taken off my tub surround walls.  I live in a sparsely populated county with minimal choices in remodeling materials.  I have been looking online for something that's somewhat affordable and doesn't look really low end or cheap..I'm afraid to order something that I can't see before it arrives because I don't want to be stuck with it if I don't like it.    I am not interested in tile because I refuse to clean grout.  I want a solid surface that is easy to clean and maintain.  I got a quote from a local countertop store for Corian for $3900.  Yikes!  When I first got the quote, I didn't even consider this because of the cost.  I really haven't been able to find anything better or more affordable and now I am considering the Corian.

For anyone who has Corian shower walls, I would appreciate your thoughts.  Do you like it?  Is it durable and long lasting?  Would you purchase it again?

Thanks for your input, advice and/or help.

Re: Corian for tub surround shower walls

@lavenderfields , I have Corian countertops in my kitchen and bathrooms.  I have never heard of it as a tub surround.  Corian is very durable and one of the reasons I opted for it in the kitchen was because any knife marks, etc can be buffed out.  Not a consideration for a shower.  Have you considered an acrylic sorround?  One of my walk showers is this and it is a dream to maintain.  LM

  • We added a master suite on in 2000 and used Sandstone for the shower:  3 pieces, extra high, smooth surface.  Very easy to maintain and still looks great.  The color we chose looks like sand with tiny speckles all over.

We opted for a beautiful shower curtain....easier to

maintain than any " glass "

@Lilysmom1 How do you clean your acrylic shower?  We had one installed and the company gave us a list of products to use which don't really seem to do the job.

@lavenderfields    ONYX is a smooth, custom size product that we used in our bathroom remodel...for the shower.  It is easy to maintain, and still looks like new.  Our local lumber yard carries the product and they had samples to look at and there are a lot of color choices.

Our contractor works with the lumberyard both are (small, family owned business').   We are very happy with the product.

You can go to their website (ONYX) and read about the product.

Re: Corian for tub surround shower walls

Just a quick note about tile surrounds. Larger tiles would result in fewer grout lines and the newer grouts like Fusion Pro are largely maintenance free and antimicrobial. They never need sealing and clean easily. Older types of grout were more chalk-line and harder to maintain. The higher end new stuff is vastly better.

Corian is a fine option also. If the price you were quoted ($3900) included installation, that's not a bad price. If installation isn't included, then the final price could nearly double.

I don't have any advice or an opinion.  I just came here to say that we still have cultured marble in our bathrooms, and I love it.  When did it ever become "the thing" to have household materials that are expensive and time-consuming to maintain?  Cultured marble, Formica, linoleum...all things of the past that required little care.  Now?  The popular choices for home improvements are expensive and require a great deal of care in most instances.

@lavenderfields   I had Corian walls in my tub/shower at my last home.  They were in the kids' bathroom, and even though I had a squeegee there, they seldom used it.

I have to say, it was very easy to keep clean.  After about 15 years of use, I sold the house, and the shower walls still looked perfect.

l just redid my bathroom , took out the tub and put a large shower in it's place . l used flexstone , comes in 3 pieces . l got it from Menards . Had to order , but they have samples in the store . Cost about $2000 with the shower pan , just for materials . Took nearly 3 months for it all to get here . 63306B68-1DEF-4D88-AE58-007F19E529E0.jpeg

I use Mr. Clean.  My home is 17 and my shower looks like the day it was installed.  LM
