We have a small black classic oriental style coffee table in the living room; a huge one upstairs in the den; and none in the family room downstairs. There is a big sectional in there and we have those little narrow tables that slide under the furniture there (2) to put drinks on.
I LOVE those little portable tables! We have a couple of extra ones when we have a lot of people.
I have an end table here and there between recliners and a couple of small oriental square table I have together in front of another sofa. Actually I have "tables" because I don't have matching sets of end tables any more come to think of it!

I have an oval shaped glass top coffee table and I can't imagine not having one in my greatroom. It would be awful empty looking without anything in front of the sofa.

Yes, a very unique one that has been so handy this last year. The table is square, on rollers, the top raises about 2 ft and there is storage space under the top. After my knee surgery I used the table to eat on.

I still have one in the living room, but no sofa anymore. I place it in front of two chairs angled together with a large side table between them (I know sounds weird but looks great).
I think some rooms look better without them though.
And I'll admit, they are all about the decor I put on them. They have never really been about practical use for me (serving coffee....hence the term coffee table)

Yes, I have a table in front of the sofa. Sometimes I have end tables and sometimes I don't. Sometimes they match and sometimes they don't. I tried a large ottman instead of a coffee or cocktail table but didn't like the look and the table isn't for feet anyway. If someone wants to put their feet up, I do have an ottoman grouped with another chair or they can sit in the reclining chair. The space in front of the sofa looks bare to me without some kind of table.

@CherryHugs It depends on how often you use the room. If it is quite often, yes I would buy a cocktail table or square ratton cube (storage). I actually have one and use it as one of my end tables but you can use it in front of a sofa.

I have a glass top coffee table in my formal living room which these days are only used for reading and an ottoman on my family room. No side tables in either room. this is on purpose because I don't want more places to leave 'stuff' around the house.

I used to have a 3 piece matching set of end tables and a coffee table but got rid of them.
I found a nesting set of tables that I use as end tables on one side of my sofa and the other side I put a floor lamp.
I bought Valeries faux leather storage ottomans. I bought 6 and use them like a coffee table. This gives me storage and seatingand makes a nice casual look.

My mom always had one. But when I got married 30 years ago I hated them. I still don't have one but I do have end tables. Got to have somewhere to put a lamp, I went through a time that I felt like they dated a room.
But lately I have been seeing some that I would like, but I have a small living room and right now it's just not the right space for it .
