Before switching to hardwood floors, I always had white carpeting and loved it. If anything stained the carpet, I would use hydrogen peroxide on it full strength and it would always remove the stain.

I have the smaller Hoover carpet cleaner and believe it or not, I have found a few drops of Persil laundry detergent in the tank to be the best carpet cleaner. I do go back over it with clear rinse water. I've tried vinegar water as a rinse but I don't believe the vinegar smell ever dissipates.

I have a Bissell unit and I do use their products with it. After I have cleaned the carpet, I go back over it with clear water and a cup or so, of white vinegar in the unit. That cuts any remaining soap residue and it does not leave the vinegar odor. HTH
I find vinegar to be a great odor killer, especially for smoking odors or musty smells. After I use it I don't smell it at all.

I prefer tge Bissell products. They do the job. I have light colored carpet and a variety of Royal Palace rugs in a variety of colors with dogs, kids, etc. This product also does not have any "funky" smell either wet or dry. I have allergies so some of these cleaners really bother my sinus and migraines.

We had our tile floors and carpets steam cleaned Friday and OMG it smells so good in here. Like citrus fruit. So not only are the floors clean but they are making the house smell wonderful.

@Mom2Dogs Remember less is more in using soap in your machine. Too much soap and it will attract dirt and your carpet will look worse than before after a few months.
I would use minimum soap and possibly vinegar after reading the posts, and then go over it with plain water until the water is clear.

I cleaned a carpet today and used a cleaner for pet odors. It did a great job. I couldn't believe how much dirt it picked up though, even with no shoes allowed, the water was quite dirty. Must have been dog feet.

I own a Bissell and I purchased the Bissell shampoo but that does not mean you have to buy the same shampoo as your shampooer. Bisssell makes an excellent shampoo. I need to do my carpeting too but I have been procrastinating. ![]()
