Even though I like the artwork, it is a very odd choice for the dining room. I actually don't think it would work in most areas of a home other than an enclosed porch or something similar.

Could be a waterfront condo, but actually from the painting it looks like it might be in the desert. The dining room is so blah this really does bring some life and color to it. Maybe the painting has family members in it. It could have been painted from a family photograph.

If the owners like it that’s all that matters.
Personally, I don’t like that artwork at all. Not in that dining room or anywhere else.

It almost reminds me of a sort of ironic, David Hockney 'wannabe' painting. Not my taste, but golly, any serious collector, if they had his work, would hang the painting anywhere in the house, and consider themselves lucky!
This isn't a Hockney, and it's a painting I don't like, but I love it when art collectors sprinkle their finds throughout the house, wherever they think they are well showcased-- so location-wise, to me it is fine.

I lean toward a formal dining room and would not put that art work in it. In fact it doesn't do anything for the drab dining area shown .

First, while I don't hate it, that would never be my 'cherished' art work. Added to that, given the rest of the room, the art does't make much difference one way or the other. To me, other than the awful ceiling fixture, this looks more like a low-end conference room than a dining room.

Art is a personal choice. It should be something you love and appreciate and enjoy. It should give you pleasure and have meaning to you. It should never be purchased because the colors match the room or just to fill in a space. This is done in commercial spaces, hotels. furniture show rooms. etc. The art doesn't have to be "priceless" but something that gives you joy, it's your home. My most priceless piece of art hangs on the wall, it is the centerpiece of my living room, is a wreath my son made when he was 4(he's now 41) and its made from a wire coat hanger with sandwich bags, sprayed gold. The pleasure it gives me is beyond worth.
My objection to the dining room is the choice of lighting, it blocks the painting when entering the room. Another choice of lighting would be better.

Loved your post..I agree... as I said previously art is personal.
The big light fixture would go way before the art if it were my home.
Hope you enjoy many more years looking at your sons wire coat hanger sandwich bag wreath

I would hang it in another room. It just seems (out of place) in this dining room.

I'd put it in a den. I'm not fond of it, but it could be the owner's grand children or children.
