@Mistreatedbycs The irritating thing about the fan is that it's in our spare room, which is rarely used. I sleep in there when my husband snores and I can't sleep, so the fan is not used that much, and should have lasted many more years.
As someone else mentioned, I think we got a lemon. I think Hunter is a good brand and I generally like a lot of their styles.

Gotta agree with @Mominohio that even Hunter fans aren't what they used to be.
I'd be tempted to repair before I's replace. Even tho out of warranty I'd call and see if they would replace the part or check eBay.

I am not sure what brand to buy when we replace, any suggestions?
Also, my husband and I are discussing the number of blades needed on the fan. Do more blades move more air? There is no air conditioning in that room.

I prefer the 5 blade 52 inch fan. The Brand does not matter. Even if it´s a small room I prefer the 52 inch.

@Mom2Dogs Call the company and explain the issue and you never know. They may say they had trouble with that fan or part and offer you some coupon, part or compensation. It's just a phone call and worth a try!

Never had a problem or needed a repair. Neither are Hunter or other expensive brands.
I agree, you got a lemon.
@x Hedge I doubt it's a lemon. I'm sitting under 2 Hunters in my family room right now. from 1972. Yours are well made, from the 1980s. Everything they make in the last 10 years is garbage. And we have no choice but to accept this and our landfills are full. Grrrr
Huh?
Pardon me, but I'm not clear about your reply.
Are you saying it's garbage because it's too new but not a lemon because it's a Hunter?
Hunter is a good brand with a good reputation. OP's Hunter has failed, been repaired, and failed again, which is certainly atypical for a Hunter...but not for a lemon.
@x HedgeYou state here you need clarification of my post. Next time, instead of making your own assumptions and conclusions about what I said, I'd appreciate it if you would tag and ask me.
Besides that, I told you I own Hunter fans, you state you don't, so it's quite likely I know something about them.

@Mom2Dogs I agree with those who feel you may have gotten a lemon. I have four, four blade Hunter fans. They have performed well for around three decades. Two of them have had almost daily use during six months out of the year here in TX.
Things being what they are these days, it's hard to know if they are still being made as well as in the past, when they were considered one of the best.

@Mom2Dogs About how old is the Hunter fan that died? If the fan is about 20 years old or newer, it was probably made in China. Also, Hunter owns Casablanca Fans now.
Maybe you should also call the independent lighting store where you bought the fan and explain the problems you've had. Depending on how old it is, maybe they will give you a credit towards a new fan. It doesn't hurt to ask.
As far as buying a new one, unfortunately, almost every ceiling fan (if not all) is made in China now and the quality is just not there like it was 20, 30, or more years ago. Just this week we received a new sofa from Macy's (all furniture is made in China now too), if we get 4 or 5 years out of it, we'll be lucky.

The "rarely used" part could be your issue. Motors experience their most wear in starting or stopping. Once running, they tend to keep running with little trouble. The only things electrical really replaceable on a ceiling fan are the switch and a capacitor if it uses a capacitor to start the motor. (None that I've used have a capacitor, but I've never had a Hunter fan. Let me also add that a remote control box could also be an issue if the fan has a remote control, but once again, mine don't.)
When I start a ceiling fan for the season they typically get a little noisy as the bearings need a bit of time to redistribute their lubrication, but once up and running for a bit the noise disappears.
If you have a remote control fan and you suspect the remote control box on the fan is the issue, then first, obviously, check the batteries in the remote control. If it's an optical remote where you have to point it towards the fan to control it, find the sensor on the fan and make sure it's nice and clean and unobstructed. (Also check the IR emitter on the remote. Some dirty fingerprints there could be affecting the function of the remote.) Remote controls tend to have issues over time and if you have another fan that uses the same remote try taking that remote into the room with the non-functioning fan and see if it works with that remote. It could just be the remote control has gone bad. Moisture can build up in remotes over time with changes in humidity and temperature and disable a remote. Opening it up and drying/cleaning the interior can often restore them.
