@Carol Diane @faeriemoom  And then I think this turns into a vicious cycle, you know carpet cleaned, stains return, cleaned again, back again on & on...In addition I think carpet cleaners treat the carpeting with a top coat of something.

Hi @granddi .

When I moved to a new state a few years back, I initially leased a place in order to get to know the area before buying.

It had wall to wall off white carpeting throughout.

Anyway, when it was time to move, I had the carpets professionally cleaned.

The carpet guy called me over & pointed at some very 'clean' spots - whiter than the carpet surrounding them.

He said 'You used some off the shelf carpet cleaner here, didn't you?' He added that stuff like that can often make a problem even worse by almost bleaching the carpet.

The guy said that this is the only thing you should clean your carpet stains with:

In a large spray bottle add vinegar to about 1/3 of the bottle, then a few drops of Dawn, & fill the rest w/ water & shake.

He even recommended using that for pet stains.

It works.

But I think that what you're dealing with is some type of grease - which another poster pointed out already.

Maybe try 'goo gone', or 'krud cutter', wait, & then use the vinegar solution?

Good luck!

Muddling through...
