Cabins in the woods

[ Edited ]

Love looking at all these type of pictures on Pinterest. It's my other world.

Then it happened...someone showed an interior, that totally was wrong (to me) to go into a home like this. I'm no interior decorator but, I wouldn't choose "modern chairs" to go in the picture. Like a bucket of cold water being thrown on you.

Would you be able to be a decorator for a home?

What would be your vision of a "get away home" and how would you decorate it?

Two bedroom cottage, with living room in back overlooking a lake.  Pale teal colors with yellow accents.

I don't know that I think the interior has to match the outside, other than I think it's important to take into account views from windows.

Public vs. private space.  What I live with behind the walls is a purely personal decision.  Probably, though, in an "organic" sense, the inside will reflect the outside just because it extends naturally.

I'm a fan of the Louis Sullivan aesthetic.

I once lived in a cabin.  A friend left a baby grand, Waterford lamps, and inlaid tables.  Then the coffee table was a rough-hewn thing that you could strike a match on.  I liked it.

We live in a cabin in the woods. Decorating is not important to us.

Probably not.  Though I try, I am very bad at scale.

A house overlooking the ocean.  The decor would be clean and simple.

What I find hard to do, is to put together decor in a style that I don't like.

I intensely dislike Asian/Oriental decor. If I had to put together a space using that, I simply would have no interest or fun in doing it.

I have always wondered if interior decorators have trouble creating styles that they just don't care for, or if they learn to see the 'beauty' in everything.

I don't have a decorating gene. Fortunately, once I get everything in place and comfortable for us , I am pretty much content for the next 20 or so years. I save a whole lot of money. One of my oldest & dearest friends is an interior decorator. She helps me, but she is also aware that I'm just not into the trends or changing things around all the time. She gives me good, practical suggestions then leaves it at that.

The contrast and interplay  between architectural style and furnishings can be very interesting and totally appropriate. It just depends on your taste.  We have classic architect-designed mid century furniture plus antiques in our post and beam barn home in town. Here at the lake, our log house contrasts a bit with the mix of white cottage furniture and bright colors with contemporary accents.

I wouldn't mind owning Tom Cruise's quaint cabin in the woods in Telluride, Colorado. I think is for sale for $59 million. It's like heaven on earth in Telluride. My favorite place. The pictures you see when you google it shows the interior and I love how it's decorated.

For a cabin in the woods, I would make it comfortable with warm colors and some bright accent colors.  No theme.

But I would like to have a decent bathroom.
