Thought this was such a fun change-of-pace room, so different from the cookie-cutter, Pinterest-approved styles that abound online. I love a designer who dares to be different, like Carey Karlan, of the Connecticut-based firm, Last Detail Interior Design.
The space was featured in Hudson Valley magazine, as a living room that doubles as a family room-- or vice versa!
Look at the earthy texture on that stone fireplace...love how she contrasted that with the luxe shimmery mirror.
It's cozy, but filled with natural light. The room's not even necessarily in colors that I'd use, but that's overruled for me, by the warm personality it exudes. It's the overall "feeling" that overrides everything else, for me.
A little closer in, you can tell how inviting and comfortable it is. Can imagine sitting on that soft, mohair-wool rug, and playing checkers or Scrabble at that coffee table--
And it's not a fluke! The adjoining dining area has that same expertly rendered, but down-to-earth and welcoming air--
Reminds me of the diversity of interior design styles that pervaded when I first started getting interested in design, in my teens. There was so much more sheer individuality featured in the published interiors back then, or so it seemed.
Surprisingly, another space that struck me similarly recently, is the one below-- equally artfully done, but more quirky, with the exuberant color-blocking, harkening back to Cubism, the deliberately kooky little petite lampshades, and modernist panther.
Yes, different than the first 'living-room-as-family-room', but similar, in the sense that it actually expresses a point of view that interestingly deviates from the interior design boilerplate of the 2020's.

Love that Coffee table, couch and chairs and fireplace and mirror. I don't really care for the chairs in front of the fireplace, but I don't see anywhere else they would go, there is a lot of furniture in that room.....
The Dining room is nice and open and airy. I really like the Dining Room chairs...

I love this. I love putting unexpected pieces together and making them look like they were meant to be combined.

It looks crowded and clutter... it would be a tight fit with people.

This living/family room and the dining room are a little move visually interesting but sitll comes off as very vanilla with a pops of color. I love the stonework on the fireplace and that coffee table is beautiful.
I actually like the second living room space much better...even that funky print on the chairs.

I'm not a fan of the color choices and really dislike the mirror over the fireplace even though I understand why she chose a reflective surface for that location.

There are pretty elements in the family room, the stonework, fireplace, coffee table and all the warming light through the windows. I would change out the mirror and definitely replace the pink/orange bench with something prettier and more comfortable ![]()
Love everything in the dining room, table beautiful chairs, hutch, artwork, chandelier and wood flooring.
Thank you @Oznell
