I don't know how old you are, but factor "aging in place" into your design. If this is going to be your forever home, and you decide on a multi-level home, try to include a master suite on the main level. If you don't use it right away, your guests could use it. Also, consider building a Murphy bed in one of the extra bedrooms, especially if it will be used as an office/den. This gives you an extra bedroom if you need it. Good luck!

So much to consider...
Your Age and Steps
Number of bedrooms you need (especially if you will be having family sleep there throughout the year) or Grandkids sleeping over.
Do you entertain frequently
Location of House (MTS, Beach area, City, Farm Are etc)
Yard Maintenance
ETC
I would hire a decorator and landscaper

My neighbor has been having their retirement house built for nearly two years now, it's been stop and go. Problems with getting materials and the cost has sky rocketed. For everything you don't like to do, there is someone to hire it out to....at a cost. I've heard of someone, I think certain general contractors do it, that will oversee the building of the home and be on site to make sure things are done right and to answer questions. There are some companies that are all in one, everything you need under one roof to pick out....cabinets, faucets, sinks, hardware, flooring,...the list goes on and on. I've gone to several of those but found selection limiting. Then, there's always an interior designer. Is this a custom build or a new build in a designed neighborhood? If it's going to be in a neighborhood/community, then you pick out your stuff with them. I like decorating/remodeling, but if it's something you don't look forward, do it a little at a time. Tackle one room at a time. I like consistency throughout a home...colors and flooring, etc. I wouldn't be painting one room a calming neutral and then paint another room red.

So very sorry for your circumstances.
I would put:
Glass walls in the shower and plenty of kitchen storage.
A sleep number bed never needs another mattress unless you puncture it which is next to impossible.
Google image rooms you like. You know the availability for the furniture you will be buying.
You've got this.![]()

Since you have already purchased the lot, I would ride around the area. Look at houses that you like. Many of our neighbors have added onto their houses. And some of the designs really are attractive.
Many people have used the same builder. And talking with the neighbors, he can do it all. He has designers for exterior and interior. And all your wants and needs are addressed. One of our neighbors even added a third floor for the kids playroom.
And the neighbors are quite proud of the work they had gotten done. We have had tours of many of the houses. And each one fits what the homeowner wanted. All of them are unique.
If you have a dog, walk around the area. You will meet your new neighbors in no time. And get their input.

Must have brand name Toto toilets. (Japanese Manufacturer) Yes,Toto brand toilets are expensive but uses less water and problem free. We've had this brand in two of our homes over the past 20 years without any problems.

If I had to build another house I would do:
no hipped roofs
bigger more functional laundry/mud room
real stairway up to attic room (no pull down stairs)
a basement
as many closets as I could get
two full baths, one with a shower, one with a bathtub
As far as decorating...If you're not good at it, find a room you love and copy it!
I edited this to add....a covered front porch!
