I bought an old style GE about 4 years ago. I wanted a top loader that had fill levels you could set yourself. None of that "going by weight" stuff. I wanted one also that had "hot" and "warm" wash settings. I don't think anything comes clean in cold water.

I also didn't want to pay an arm and a leg for a washer either. Got a very good deal at Lowe's.

Enjoy your Speed Queen! Smile

{#emotions_dlg.thumbup1} I just bought a basic top loader, Roper By Whirlpool, from Lowe's. I got a great deal and it works great. It's just me, so I don't need a big, huge machine with all the bells and whistles (more to go wrong, IMO)

We purchased our Speed Queen just a month ago on the Internet at ""Appliance World"".com

They had the best price even with 50 shipping costs.

Where do you buy a Speed Queen? Big box store or Sears? A local company? I have a very vintage Maytag (30 years old in May) that I worry with every load will bite the dust.

I saw Speed Queen washers at Lowe's when I was looking for a washer. Don't know if they still carry them or not. That was 4 years ago.

betteb...Same here. It's just me so I didn't need some fancy schmancy thing.

I have a top loader without the agitator and would not buy again. The clothes do not get clean like the old fashioned agitator machines. Also I hate that the lid locks and you can not add items. My next washing machine and I am sure there will be one will be a top loader with a agitator. Just my two cents.

I wanted the old style too so I got a GE washer with agitator. Man, the inside is huge! I can wash big comforters. Like it very much.

Re: Bought a new Washing Machine Old School Style!

I have a Sears Lady Kenmore top loader washing machine, and it is 20 years old. The other day the knob for the cycles broke off in my hand. I had it repaired and it cost me $92.00. I told the repairman that I was considering getting a new washer in the near future. He told me that the one I have is a very good machine, and they don't make them like that anymore. He said if it breaks I should consider getting it fixed. In 20 years this is the first time I have had anything break. If I do get a new one, I will only buy Sears Kenmore. All my appliances are Kenmore. I did by a different dryer several years ago and regretted it.

When we bought our new home 4 years ago the builder had installed all basic quality GE appliances. Washer and dryer, dishwasher, stove, microwave, fridge and disposal. I can honestly say that no one here is unhappy with the quality or performance of any of the appliances so far. Personally, i don't think all the fancy and expensive things that are availabe today are needed and are just another thing to breakdown. I am happy with my basic appliances, they do exactly what is needed and you don't have to have a degree in computers to use them.

Re: Bought a new Washing Machine Old School Style!

I bought a Kenmore last year, and I cannot tell you how much I HATE that machine. It's one of those that seeks the level needed of water. Never mind if the clothes are filthy. And it spins the clothes so tightly that I know I'm going to have to iron them even after they go through the dryer. It all sounds so good and energy efficient on paper and in advertising.

The only way I've "fooled" this particular model is to put a load in on Soak and let them get good and wet--it doesn't spin just drains. Then do a full wash on bulky. Well, there goes the water saving. I can't afford to buy another one and should have sent it back after the first wash.

Re: Bought a new Washing Machine Old School Style!

Wow! Thank you. If I can't find a knob/switch for my old GE, (which I love because of the very short wash cycle, which is easy on the motor/spin/agitation mechanisms), I'll purchase your suggestion. I'm making a note of it. I'm sure that one day, eventually, I'll need a new washer. (Hopefully not, though.) .... Thanks again.

Re: Bought a new Washing Machine Old School Style!

Beckyblu: We had issues with two name brand washing machines within 10 years. I was fed up and after reading hundreds of reviews decided on the Speed Queen. We had a local mom and pop store that had them in stock. They tried to show us the top 3 junk machines. We told them were were not interested and started to walk out. The sales man then said they had a machine in stock that would be like what my mother purchased. Finally showed us the Speed Queen and we told them that was what we came in to purchase. The delivery man said this was the machine that kept them in business because people were tired of the big expensive machines with multiple repair issues. I love my machine! Clean clothes, smells good and very little wrinkles. I will purchase the Speed Queen dryer when my dyer needs replacing.
