I didn't want or need the ice maker or water dispenser. The more stuff - chances of problems are much higher.

My dad's stove is 68 years old and still works fine -- it is a Westinghouse.  I am now on my 3rd stove.  It is four years old, so I guess in 6 years I might have to start looking (oh joy!).

They are just not making things like they used to.

I do think the life of appliances has to do with family, large families use them often, kids are in & out of the fridge maybe even slamming doors, some wash everyday. Just two of us and I can go 3 days til I need to use the dishwasher, we don't slam doors or use the washer/dryer everyday.

I hope you have better luck with your Lowe's appliance purchase than we did.  We fell for the getting 5% off with Lowe's card.  Every appliance we purchased did not last - Washer/Dryer, Hot Water heater, dish washer and Vaccuum (not Dyson but another expensive brand I can't remember).  All died within 5 years and were Whirlpool/KitchenAid - big brand names horrible quality.  I replaced all of those appliances with ones purchased from local appliance and plumbing suppliers.  They have outlasted 10 years and are still going strong.  Also I get great service.  Will never purchase an extended warranty.  The stores get a bonus for selling them because they know 99% will never be used.

Wow.  So are you saying that  name brand appliances sold by Lowes are lesser quality somehow?

Actually yes I am.  The big manufacturers make less expensive lines specifically for these big box stores.  This isn't specifically just for appliances but if you think about other high end products sold at the big box stores such as the John Deere tractors, Weber grills etc.  As in everything you pay for what you get.  

This is something that was brought to my attention when we started replacing everything we just purchased.

Most repairmen are SCAMMERS. In the mid-1980's, my refrigerator went out and I called a repairman who told me it's the compressor -- and I paid him $500. to replace. A month later, the refrigerator broke down and I had to buy another one. After watching many of those tv shows, ie, 60 Minutes; Dateline; 20/20 --- I realized that I was SCAMMED!!!!

Now - when something goes wrong with my washer/dryer (after the warranties expire) - I just replace them.

Years ago, I also got SCAMMED by a repairman I called to fix my washing machine.

Now - I'm lots smarter and wiser --- and with this site and Nextdoor --- I'll never be taken advantage again.

Honestly I don't call what happened to you as a scam.  When someone comes to my house to make a repair and quotes me $500 and I know the cost of a new one is $700.  By using basic logic, I'm better off investing in new than putting that much money in an older appliance.  Whenever someone quotes me a high repair cost, I ask lots of questions and get more options.  Do the same with car repairs - never take their first quote and negotiate the cost.  Especially as a woman I don't want to be taken advantage of.

Also by purchasing my appliances from local reputable companies - Not the Big Box stores - I get great honest reliable services.  They also don't try to sell you an extended warranty which tells you something.  They offer a quality product, stand behind it and aren't getting kick backs for selling something people dont' need.
