Blue and Tan/Beige

[ Edited ]

My mother-in-law recently moved into an assisted living apartment. She desperately needed some new furniture to take with her. The apartment walls were already painted tan, and she took her living room tables and bedroom furniture from her house which are a medium brown color.

She gave her granddaughter permission to do all the shopping for the new pieces. Her granddaughter asked if she had a color in mind for the sofa and she said light blue. So the granddaughter selected a color scheme of blue and tan.

New pieces:

The sofa is a pretty light blue color with blue and tan printed pillows. Her lift chair is dark brown. Her kitchen table is dark brown with blue and tan printed floral cushions & placemats. Her living room drapes are solid tan, and the drapes in her bedroom are solid dark blue. Her bedding is a blue print.

It's not a color scheme I would choose, but I think it looks fine. My mother-in-law doesn't like it. She told me the other day when I was visiting that she doesn't think tan and blue go together, but she hasn't told her granddaughter that.

What do you think about blue and tan together? Here are some examples from the Internet for your consideration.

I don't like the sofa color with the blue pillows. I think a lighter color sofa would work better. I like the rest of the room.

My favorite room. I think the lighter sofa color works with the blue pillows. The tables are a bit too old fashioned for me. They actually look like the tables my mother-in-law has had for years.

This room & furnishings are ok. Love the huge windows. I don't like the dark blue velvet ottoman.

I don't like this one. I don't like the blue accent wall or the geometric blue print on the chair or pillows. The furnishings aren't appealing to me either.

I like the furnishings and window in this room. Surprised, but the orange pillows seem to work to me. This blue wall color looks better than the previous one, but I still don't think I'd want that wall color.

I don't really care for the style of the sofa, but I think the lighter color works with the blue pillows. I don't like the ladder or the tables. Not loving the black trim around the doors and another blue wall I don't like.

It's very boring and she probably needs a cheerful environment.  I'd just add pops of yellow in pillows, art, a rug, etc.  Maybe some yellow faux flowers

Eta- Also incorporate some yellow into the kitchen or bath.

Blue , Tan and Beige are nice colors for an outfit. I think the decor colors were meant to be comforting . For many  moving to Assisted Living is a big adjustment .

I like certain shades of blue & tan together...My favorite is the second photo.  However your mother in law has to live with it and one should be happy with their rooms.

@wilma

Pic 1 is my fav.  For me, it has the advantage of being the brightest room of all of them.  And, I absolutely love the wicker coffee table.  (or is it wicker?  just wondering because it seems much thicker.)  Anyways, getting back to the colors, I think if the sofa was a lighter beige (not tan) & had ligher blue pillows, it would match better.

Yes, a huge adjustment. She seems to be doing ok, but moving out of her house that was her home for over 50 years has got to be difficult.

Maybe the colors will grow on her? I don't think she'll say anything to her granddaughter about not liking it. She does have her tables and bedroom furniture from her house. We also hung her favorite artwork pieces, and she has framed photos of family around her.
