Bliss Hammock lock mechanism

I have two of the M25993 Bliss Hammocks Gravity Free Recliner with Canopy & Cup Tray. I'm just unfolding them for the first time. I'm having problems with the side locks. Are they supposed to go in an up and down motion or do they go out to the sides? I wish the Bliss rep would spend a little bit more time on explaining and showing the locking mechanism than on how to put on the head rest and cup holder.
