black and white prints look best with simple black frames.
If a mat is even used, white.
Black and white is simple and clean - no need to try to complicate it.

I am sitting here in my living room trying to imagine my black & white prints with colored mats. I don’t think I would like them as well. I guess it could work for others, but I prefer a cleaner look with my black & white photos & prints. Maybe I could live with one different color mat, but this is just too many different colors.
Here is photo of my black & white prints. Sorry - the reflection is from our front door behind me.

It seems to me that the photos weren't meant to have a sentimental quality. It looks like their purpose is just what they're used for, art. The subject matter, composition, and lighting appear to have a commercial quality. I do like the variety of colored mats with the b&w photos, and I like that the statement is enhanced with the toss pillows below. Would I like colorful mats with more sentimental photos? Maybe/probably. To me, it's a dichotomy not so different than in fashion when we wear combat boots with a ruffled dress. I also like that everyone has their own taste.

I have many black and white photos throughout the house and while I like the idea of the colored matting I prefer black, white or gray matting for black and white photos. That is my taste.
