Re: Big paint color disaster

I've used this Sherwin Williams color called "petit four" in the master and all public rooms of the last 3 homes I've owned, starting about 1981.  It's basically a pale peachy pink with beige undertones.  Goes great with SW colors.  I'm still not tired of it and will probably repaint again using it as it's very neutral.

Re: Big paint color disaster

@HonestLife - I've never gone through this, but years ago my friend did. She came over to get me one day to show me her family room. She didn't like the color she had painted. It was a creamy beige and I thought it looked great. She called some of our other friends, and they agreed with me. But there was something about it she didn't like. She ended up going to get another color and repainting right away. The color she used was like a mushroom color. She said she wasn't crazy about it, but it would be good for resale, which wouldn't happen for at least a few years. I didn't like it either!

I'm not a grey person. Every millennial I know uses that color throughout their home, including babies' rooms! One of our nephews doesn't have any other color anywhere- just grey, black, and white. To me it looks sterile. I like warmer colors, like cream, light tan, clay, etc.  Smiley Happy

@beach-mom : that's my 20-something DDIL and my 30-something niece's homes.

That's also DDIL's capsule wardrobe- fear of color!

Studying to become a nurse. Will probably wear navy scrubs daily, too, LOL!

Re: Big paint color disaster

We are in the process of repainting our entire downstairs. It's taking us a while because we have to do it after work and on weekends. After much consternation about a gray I finally chose the color called Piece of Cake from Magnolia Homes. We did not use their paint but took the color sample to Home Depot because we like the Behr marquis paint. They put it in a computer and matched it perfectly. It is an absolutely beautiful color it has tones of very very light turquoise with a undertone of blue as well and gray it is just gorgeous. It makes my white molding pop and my white kitchen cabinets glow. We just put in LVP flooring in a gray beige and boy does the paint compliment my floor. It's a very coastal and modern but very warm look which is what I was looking for. I was worried but I am so happy with it.

I understand about hating a paint color I chose. I have two bedrooms upstairs with colors that did not turn out at all like I thought they would. Maybe this fall we will change it.  Sometimes if you change or paint your accessories it may bring it to life or bring it up a bit. i have a dark table in the corner of the living room but I am going to paint it white because the dark furniture no longer goes with what I have just done.

I have 3 different shades of gray in 3 different rooms. I used it as an accent wall in each room. I look at it as a neutral and find it very easy to decorate around.

Re: Big paint color disaster

@HonestLife  I am sitting in my living room that is so dark and depressing in a taupe color that turned out so dark. It is in the hallway also. I left for the day and the painters came in and it was done when I got back.  Been saving my money to hire a painter. I hope it can be covered up. I have lived with this for 5 years!!!

I am ready for the gray fad to pass. It is so cold and uninviting. They tried to liven it up with bright accessories, but no. It is like the old Christopher Lowell shows where he was firmly against white rooms because they lack warmth. The gray not only lacks warmth, it is depressing. Now furniture is even gray. It is a fad and will be gone. Meanwhile I will stick with more traditional choices in paint.

@On It If you watch designers on YouTube they all say that gray as a neutral wall color is passing this year.  Since people are at home more they are starting to use warmer shades like taupe and shades of beige with natural elements.

Re: Big paint color disaster

Ok, I have to share my latest 2 paint choice blunders, 6 months ago. We moved.  1) I wanted a taupe shade. After scrutinizing every taupe shade from every brand, I settled on an unusual shade called "Intellectual gray", (not a gray at all so don't always go by  the silly name) by SW. It was going on several accent walls. After the expensive paint job was done, it looked perfect on one wall,  but in another room that had little natural light, after sunset I swear it was pea soup green. Really- It was the ugliest color ever, in that room. So unpredictable. After researching again, the color does have a green undertone, so watch out for the undertones!  And #2) I also chose " Mountain air" for another accent wall in the kitchen, we'll that looked light baby blue - another blunder. So also watch pastels, they can look like they belong in babies room....

I wound up repainting all these walls myself but my hubby never lets me forget these blunders...

My new philosophy with paint ( to self) going forward, always stick to the most popular colors, they are popular for a reason!

Re: Big paint color disaster

@HonestLife Gray was popular in the 1980's and 90's.  We moved into a home with gray carpet and gray walls and I recarpeted and painted in a very neutral cream color.

I loved it.  It was warm and goes with everything--even gray.  That's what we have in this house too.  I just think gray is cold, and can be too much quickly. But I love touches of it.

Re: Big paint color disaster

Count me in for painting boo-boos-----had a few and lived with it for awhile. I got those adhesive sheets and painted a few of them with a few different colors to hang on the walls in different light and lived with them for a few weeks and found the best color ever to re- paint my walls---was so happy with the results too--
