Re: Big Tree ~ Just Can't Decide

[ Edited ]

When I entertained large crowds, I put up a 10 ft tree in my dining room.  It was on a rotating standing.

The tree had a massive sweep at the bottom and took 2 days to light and decorate.

As much as I enjoyed doing it, I just have no reason to do all that this Christmas.

It sounds like you've been going above and beyond for a long time.  It's OK to take a break Cat Happy

Re: Big Tree ~ Just Can't Decide

I broke my foot in October.  That means my Christmas decor will be a lot less this year.  I usually overdo but plan a small tree, wreath and minimal dining and living room decor.

Re: Big Tree ~ Just Can't Decide

@Regal Bee I have three trees and in any given year I might put up two. They are all different sizes and so some years, I'll put the 'big' tree up in the living area and a table top tree in my room. Other years, I opt for only one or the other in the living area. Last year, I put up the large tree, but this year I think it's going to be the table top tree only. My third tree is a white tree, which I've used only a couple of times when I wanted to go for a specific 'look'. If you don't feel like hauling out the big tree, consider just putting up one of your smaller trees.

Re: Big Tree ~ Just Can't Decide

Two years ago when we moved, we downsized to a smaller home and a smaller tree.  I previously decorated a 7 ft. slim tree for my dining room, now I have no dining room and no large tree (donated it along with lots of ornaments before moving)...I now put up a table-top tree and it is just as beautiful as the large one....and it doesn't take much time to put things away after the holiday (that is the worst part of decorating to me)....

still puts me in the Christmas spirit even though we've downsized and I'm not too tired afterward for other activities..

Re: Big Tree ~ Just Can't Decide

I would go with the one big tree only. By the way, it looks like a nice tree, the shape and fullness! Do not feel like you have to get it all done in one day either.

Or, if you don’t feel like it at all this year - no biggie - concentrate on one smaller tree that will not take quite so long to tackle and call it a day. It can be just as pretty, just on a smaller scale.

Whatever you decide, enjoy the holiday season! 😀

Re: Big Tree ~ Just Can't Decide

I hang up a half tree, think a verticle cut right through the middle, that is about 4 foot tall.  I have cats, so cats and trees mean one thing, a new climbing post!  I use nice plastic balls in shiny colors, so when the cats bat at them, they won't break.  I hang it over a chest and drape fabric down from where the trunk would be like a skirt then put presents.  I don't have much space, so a hanging half tree that hangs on the wall is perfect and takes up little space when I store it. It is bolted into a stud so it is secure if the cats climb it.  I use a mirror in that space during the rest of the year to cover up the mount.  My mother has switched to a wrought iron tree with curly bits for hanging the ornaments she collects.  She did consider one of those German trees that hangs from the ceiling, but they have ceilings that are a weird height, 7.5 feet.  The original owners built it were both short and didn't want to heat and cool the extra space, which many older European homes are like that.  They also built a small dollhouse/tiny home for the mother-in-law.  The downstairs is one big room with a wall to separate the bath/laundry area.  The upstairs had a ceiling height of 5'7" with one room the width of the house and storage under the eaves.  My sister and I lived in it when we returned from college before we moved.  It has since been turned into my father's woodshop.  They were eclectic people.  The MIL died the following year, so they sold up and moved since she was all that was keeping them there.

My vote is that you put up the big tree.  I think you might regret not setting it up. Even if you're not in a festive mood right now, Christmas is many weeks away.

@Regal Bee....Go with your instinct and your feelings as expressed in your OP....

"For some reason, I am just not feeling it this year."

So, I would say to leave out the huge tree this year.....Your house will look just as beautiful, regardless, and you will be more relaxed to enjoy Christmas and your guests! Woman Happy

Re: Big Tree ~ Just Can't Decide

Thanks for all the wonderful and thought provoking replies. You all are great.

I think seeing all the trees in stores and on the shopping channels has a lot to do with the way I am feeling. By this time, the special feel of the trees has all but gone for me.

I am already feeling much better....don't know what I will do yet about the trees but I have decided to make my focus on smaller areas of the house and not so much the tree or trees. It's a plan.........................Smiley Very Happy
