I have two German Shelpherd dogs and always have had dogs. I had a Kirby that lasted for 25-30 years and was amazing with picking up the dog hair. It was heavy to use. I replaced it with the Dyson Animal ball version and love it. It does a great job and is so user friendly and easy on the back. I have two in two different sizes. I keep one on each floor and it works well for our needs. I swear by Dyson. I like the washable filters and all the attachments make sense. There isn't one that I don't use. It takes the chore out of vacuuming.

I've had Orecks for about 18 years. I still have the original one that QVC offered in 1998 and it works like new. I have another downstairs because I don't like carrying up and down the stairs. 

They've worked great for vacuuming cat hair from 2 cats.
