I used to get bayberry candles all the time to burn during Christmas and New Years. I saw an ad online for them and decided it would be nice to get some, I used to love the smell in the 70s. Bought mine from a company who says they're "true bayberry candles" and they smell bad to me. Wondering now if all the bayberry candles I used to get weren't really bayberry at all. Really disappointed; I paid $10 each for 8" tapers, thinking I'd gift some. I will burn in my home for the "luck" they bring but surely wouldn't give any away. Does bayberry not have a pleasant scent?

Bayberry by itself has a strong smell that isn't pleasing.  Most candle companies will mix other scents with it to give it a nice scent.

I used to buy candles and scented candle wax from the Williamsburg, VA candle company before they went out of business ( I love to pour candles).  The smell was so good.  I still have a few tapers in boxes that make the drawer where they are stored smell wonderful..

Now I order Colonial Williamsburg bayberry candles online or buy them in person. They sell tapers, jars, piller and tea lights.  They all smell great.

I always stock up when I visit. You can get order them at the "Shops at Colonial Williamsburg."

@Carolina925   Are you wanting a Christmas tree/holiday scent?  I would try a candle with pine, cranberry, and maybe cinnamon. I use to burn scented candles but my cat doesn't like them. She leaves the room whenever I burn a candle so I only use unscrented.

Re: Bayberry Candles

[ Edited ]

Colonial Candle Company has the old fashioned Bayberry fragrance I have loved my whole life. This year I discovered that Yankee Candle has brougt tback their original Holiday Bayberry jar candle that always smelled like Christmas to me. I usually avoid that brand but am using a topper to prevent sooting and am loving the fragrance this season. My son sent me some bayberry candles from a local shop in PA where he lives which I will burn for luck. I used to give bayberry tapers to people who were having a rough year when they were not so expensive and available everywhere.

@Carmie , I used to get that brand. I didn't realize they mixed other scents in them. Next year, I'll order from them. Live & learn.

@simplyfriends , I thought I wanted just a plain bayberry scented candle. Didn't realize what I used to get was a scented bayberry candle. All this time, I've thought I loved  bayberry candles! I wouldn't even mind an unscented one, they really are beautifully made candles, but these would make me do like your cat and leave the room!

Favorite comforting scent.

Cape Candle has wonderful bayberry options in pillars and tapers. Smell just like the bayberry of my youth.

Yankee Candle holiday bayberry is really lovely. I also try to avoid YC -- but that holiday bayberry is just perfection.
