I have a Sealy Posturpedic that's 14 years old so I need a new bed.  I purchased from what was then ShopNBC and the bed was great.  However, this time I do not want to purchase without trying out bed in person.

Any suggestions whether to go to one of a variety of mattress stores or whether other reputable places, like dept stores, would be better??

Does anyone have a suggestion regarding brand?? My concern is being overwhelmed by hard-selling sales people at bed store with many, many choices.

Also, how would I know if I only need mattress or whether I also need new box spring?

Thanks so much!

Re: BUYING A NEW BED

[ Edited ]

Hi!

I'm no expert w/ mattresses, but:

I'd think that if the box spring is still solid & in good shape, you don't need a new one. However, often a set will almost be cheaper than buying the mattress separately.

The last 2 sets I bought were; one at Macy's and the other at a mattress store.

Good luck!

Leesa, Saatva or Casper?

I'm thinking of trying one  of these next time.....

They look like they'd go on the exisiting box spring....mine has nothing wrong with it...

I got my current mattress from QVC in 2001, a Sealy two sided pillowtop mattress split queen....I have flipped it frequently and it still looks nice, but it's time for a new one...

I won't consider anything but a memory foam mattress which can be used with existing box springs.  I already have one and soon will get one for the other bedroom.  Some brands listed above, which usually have videos.

I would not go to a dept store.  Sometimes you have to buy the complete mattress/box spring for the warranty.  This is our 2nd Tempur-pedic mattress.  I love their memory foam, but it is expensive.  Go to stores and test the mattresses out, although it's really like not sleeping a night on them.

I am curious whether there any down sides to memory foam??  Does it retain mosture?  Does it decompose??

I wouldn't object to spending the $$ if the quality and comfort was there.  Thanks so much!!

I bought a new mattress last year from The Bed Store.  I got a Serta and am happy with it.  I bought my previous mattress from a department store and was unhappy with it from the beginning.  Both times I bought the box springs, too.  I'm pretty sure the warranty doesn't cover it unless you purchase the set.

I didn't feel a lot of pressure to buy a certain mattress.  The salesman encouraged me to try different ones.  I went to several places.

Lots of sales this weekend.

The next mattress I'll buy is a Beautyrest.

You don't need a box spring, just a frame/base.   I'm going to get an adjustable base.

I want the pillowtop firm.

Go try it, it's incredible.

it's soft, it holds you like being on a featherbed but the mattress is firm, so you get support.   It's better than a sleeping pill.
