"Hello Lovely" is a fun site that showcases a number of "old world" European looks. One of their articles repeatedly makes the point that it's more likely in European design for decor to be functional, rather than just "eye candy". Larger shapes too. I think that's especially true in genres like "Belgian farmhouse" style, which tends to be a more spare look, with much less bric a brac.
An example they use is this one:
Just focus on the decanters. It's not for everyone, but I'm one of those who loves bigger, fewer shapes in design. I love these decanters! I would have fewer.
But I disagree with the article that these are functional in this space, as well as ethereally beautiful. I don't think this homeowner is using them!! But I love to look at them. They have personality, like little people, ha.
Another old world example of decor they show is this old weathered pottery. Again, I wouldn't call it functional though, since it looks fragile and there appear to be possible cracks. I find it so soulful and handsome in the space.

I have a few outsize pieces, like one giant blue and white ginger jar, a few other things. I do have old pottery, but nothing as venerable as that above.
Two questions for you: Do you like fewer, "big" objects?
Do you like weathered, distressed pottery for display?

@Oznell - Yes, I like fewer big items now, but in the past I decorated with a lot of smaller items, i.e., my Hummels. As for distressed maybe one or two items, but I wouldn't make a theme of it. I recently bought a large distressed hurricane in ivory and it is on a large round ottoman. Lately, I am into the "less is more" idea for decorating.

The amount of decanters is just right for me and the pottery too. Less or more? For me it depends on what it is.

@Oznell I love all the decanters but would only keep the two large ones - on ‘plinths’ at either end of dresser - and maybe just another two of different sizes which I would play around with to make ‘my’ arrangement. I do like larger shapes but not all in a row and not too many.
Not keen on the pottery.

I too vote for fewer large pieces.

Hey, @twinsister , @Imaoldhippie , @dulwich , @DREAMON , I'm glad to find you all like "bigger" too!
@dulwich, excellent point about not all in a row, better "broken up" a bit...

i like many elements in this room. i like the style of the bench covers and window coverings, but, the color is a bit dreary. i enjoy the eclectic vibe of this room, but the matching sconces, with the chairs is too symetrical and matchy for my taste.
i like the decanters, but they are way too similar in looks for me. why not have decanters that have a little more personality to them.
love the farm dining table, and the cat can stay as well.

Kudos, observant @kittyloo -- and true to your screen name-- I wondered who would mention that pensive kitty first!

I found every room to have a heavy look to it.

I have a collection of decorative glass ... some cut glass vases and pitchers - other glass. Some I inherited, some were gifts. Some clear glass, some blue or red.
Too "pretty" to put away so I use them on the windowsills filled with my collection of knitting needles and Tunisian hooks. My windows face west and the colored glass at sunset is wonderful to see.
My original plan was to crochet "flowers" and use the needles and hooks as stems.... just haven't got around to it yet.
