I've heard of most of these, but grounding a room with something black is a new one to me. Guess most of my rooms aren't grounded. Not really concerned about it though.

Great question. I have enjoyed reading everyone's answers. The best advice I received is to think about how you will use the room and what elements you need to create the "feeling" of the room. Then, build the room around those elements. For me, that means the color has to be soothing to my soul, there has to be candles, and space between furniture. Then, I add objects that are meaningful to me (a mix of old and new). And art--I always need art.

Using neutrals for wall color and adding color with things that
are easily changed like pillows, throws, rugs, wall art, and linens.
Less is more.
Fresh flowers, scented candles, and candles on timers.
Not placing sofa against a wall.

Most of what I know about decorating came from my mother. She loved antiques and had many. I inherited some of them. She mixed old with new and always bought quality.
I always buy quality and never replace my wood pieces. I often reupholster furniture instead of buying new. I update pillows and pictures and some accessories but keep the same basic pieces.
My weakness is lamps. I love lamps. I don't need one or have room for another one, but I still enjoy looking at them.
Everyone in this thread has good suggestions.

@Oznell wrote:Agreed, @Nonametoday , good point, that can not be said enough. You shouldn't 'purge' based on a decorating principle that you don't agree with-- that's why I said, what is the tip that renonates most with you, individually, fits with your aesthetic, and makes you feel better, not worse, about your choices.
I expect that most of us have sort of randomly or out of frustration, shed things over the years, that we then regret not having any more. Not the best approach.
And as I said, this one guided me more with my (relatively few) new choices going forward. I've plenty of "smalls" that I'll never surrender!
@jubilant, I'm sorry that vase is gone! It's hard to find classic looking, cream or ivory vases, that are both large, and not too expensive! I noticed Target had a very cool 13 inch one, but it may be too rustic for your purposes. I just love that classic, Italian villa look :
This Deco 79 metal vase on Amazon is good looking and 13 1/2 inches, but it is metal, so would probably not work for fresh flowers:
I'm sure if you keep making the rounds of Wayfair, Crate and Barrel, etc. etc., you'll find something. If you are lucky enough to have a Home Goods near by, they always seem to have tons of neutral, oversize vessels. Good luck!
Thank you. These are lovely. I love them all. Choices now. I ordered some turkish towel rugs for my shower and my make-up area. I love to have that feel under my feet when I step out of the shower and when I am putting on make-up. I had some years ago when they were trending and they wore out. Now I find them again at Dillard's and got 4. Stocking up as they may not be available when I want them again. ;-)

Those yummy rugs sound like one of those wonderful little luxuries that make the daily grind worthwhile, @Nonametoday !

@jubilant Go to the Target website and search vases, then click on the link for white. You might see something you like, as they seem to offer a number of the more modern looking white pottery vases. They aren't my thing, but I recall seeing more than a few options and one of them might work.

Let me explain the color wheel.

@stevieb I went to the Target website and was surprised at their big selection. I found two vases that I really like. We have a store just 20 minutes from us. I am hoping to get there today. I see they also have a good pillow selection. I'm looking for them, too. Thank you for putting me onto Target!

Try to highlight anything unusual or pretty in a room as a focal point. Could be a fireplace or a window with a nice view, or create one, like one accent paint color, a wallpapered wall, or now they have peel and stick wall planks! Add or create something interesting in a room. A great thread! Thank you Oz! 💝
