Anyone sold anything at an auction house? Advice needed.

I just need advice. My daughters want NOTHING. No matter is belonged to my grandmother or my mother. I have old silver, glassware, antique furniture ;-) I want to simply find an auction house to take it off my hands. I just don't know what questions to ask before I select a place. If they sell in one lot I know I will lose. I cannot bring it to them, so I guess I lose the cost of transport. What should I look for in finding a reputable place?
