Re: Anyone else out there like just the 'base model' of things?

I'm so glad to know I'm not 'the only nerd'! I wish manufacturers and retailers would realize not everyone wants cars and appliances that are overloaded with computer technology. It simply isn't necessary, often detracts from the reason you're using it in the first place, and costs so much more. I recently helped out a family member with some household chores, including laundry - 'high tech' washer and drier. Found that I had no way to rinse out the detergent cap in the water as it was filling ( like I do in my old model washer), I couldn't throw in a last minute item because the door locks ( for obvious reasons!), and it took FOREVER for the wash cycle to run. I was wishing for my old model that day!

When it comes to appliances, I tend to get the more basic models. In my experience, the more bells and whistles, the more items tend to break.

It depends, I got the top model of the washer, but the most basic dryer. I also have a very basic, small refrigerator and the top style of the car. Seems to be a reflection of what you are most concerned about or interested in. I am getting ready to replace my thermostat with a fancy one which I think will be fun.

I am a mid range kind of girl for most things, too- with the exception of my car. I keep my car for a long time. I am currently driving a ten year old luxury brand that I bought pre- owned (3 1/2 yrs. old) for about half the price of new. I am not in a hurry to replace it, but when I do it must have all the bells and whistles!

No. Ice out the door is VERY important to me. As far as a washer, I like the more high end models because washing needs now are so varied. I want one of the newer ones with sanitizing features and a dryer with steam is in my wish list too.

I think the conveniences in appliances are something we will use every day, so why not go for it? Conveniences in things like that really pay off as much as we depend on those appliances to stay clean and healthy and take care of clothes--which are expensive.

I definitely feel that way about appliances. I once bought an upper model stove that was a floor model on deep discount. I had more trouble with that thing than I ever had with any other appliance.

I usually go looking and find the very bottom of the line Whirlpool appliance and then go one step up from that. My last washer/dryer lasted 10 yrs. My last fridge, 18yrs.

I agree with OP; the more "options," the more disasters! I don't have a fancy cellphone because I don't want it or need it. I don't care. As long as I can call out and text, I'm fine.

My DH is very "techy" and loves all the new things they come out with; not me. Truth be told, I don't even need a cellphone.

Re: Anyone else out there like just the 'base model' of things?

Really depends on what it is.

For my car, I went with the CR-V as opposed to the Pilot or a mini-van or the higher priced lines of equivalent vehicle, BUT I went with top of the line in that particular model. Got everything I wanted or needed and after 8 years I'm still loving it as much as the day I bought it.

For appliances I stick to basic functionality.

For my computer and phone, I buy the best I can afford and then keep them a very long time.

Re: Anyone else out there like just the 'base model' of things?

After watching some of the home buying and/or remodeling shows on HGTV, I'm amazed at how many people think they can't live without the "best" appliances etc - whether they can afford them or not. I watched a show recently and there were some serious overbudget issues during the remodel process due to some major issues with electrical and heating/ac. However at the end they mentioned how happy they were with their new gas stove & and the price of $5,000 was flashed on the screen. Who needs a $5k stove in their home?

Before I make any major purchase, I take a step back and ask myself - do I really need all the bells and whistles or the latest model. The answer is always a big NO. My mother and grandmother cooked for years quite well using a very basic gas stove and oven and if they could do it so can I.
