Any tips on purchasing airfare?

I didn't know where to post this. I'm going a little crazy trying to find "reasonable" airfare. When watching CNN or other news stations, they report all these great sites to find cheap airfare. I live in California, Monterey Peninsula area, and will be going to Hawaii in February. I thought I had found some good prices, my friends send "wait, wait!" and I did and of course, it went up.

Any good tips/advice out there? How long to you wait out for until you take the plunge and get your tickets?
