Oops, sorry for the mispelling of Berkhamsted...

My Mother said that one of the oldest churches in England is in Berhamsted.

One day I'm going to go there!  Also to Scotland where I understand there's a castle named after our clan (my maiden name).....

Love the Welsh as well....  if I ever get there, I might have to stay a year to see it all!!  Woman LOL

Those are nice, I hadn't seen them before. It's a nice change from a one color Berkshire type throw. These look very wintery and comfy. I can see them in a cabin or log home.

Thanks for pointing out this throw. I'd rather have Welsh made, but this is suitable since it is different than just the solid throws and nice for all year.

I like all the colors, too. Which one should I pick?

Noel7,  how neat that you are "keeping the Welshness going" in your family!  Love that. Extraordinary that you had Welsh speakers among your close relatives.  Such a lilting, yet soothing language...

I have vaguely heard of St. David's Day, but never celebrated it.  Is that when people wear leeks in their hats?  Of course I will be thrilled to have your griddle cakes recipe, thank you!  I'm so glad I saw your post on the Welsh throws!

Hi again @Oznell

St. David is the patron saint of Wales and he is celebrated on the first of March.  It IS one of the days the Welsh wear a leek!  When the Welsh fought the English invaders, they didn't have uniforms but wanted to let each other know they were Welsh.  They all had leeks in their garden so wore one on a hat or lapel to identify each other.

I will look for the Welsh cakes recipe and get back to you on this line.  It may take a couple of days, Thanksgiving has been overwhelming this year.

@Nomore

I chose the red and the green, colors of the Welsh flag, so that's nice.  Plus they work for Christmas.  I do like the blue, too, but I shy away from the light color because of the kitties.  One cat has dark fur.

@Re: ANYONE INTERESTED IN A WELSH THROW?

Hi @Oznell

I checked with my daughter, she makes the Welsh cakes for me every March 1 and uses the BBC recipe.  Instead of lard, she uses butter and she adds a little cinnamon, nutmeg, orange zest and raisins instead of currants.

Re: ANYONE INTERESTED IN A WELSH THROW?

What fun, Noel7!   They look perfectly yummy.  My husband loves anything like that, and we will thoroughly enjoy them with tea and coffee.

I won't be able to wait until St. David's Day though.  I think I will incorporate the cakes into our Christmas feasting and celebrations.  Maybe I can persuade my son to read a Dylan Thomas poem while we sup, ha.

Thanks so much for your thoughtfulness--  it's lovely to learn more about Welsh customs, and kind of you to share them with all of us!

Oh, good!  You don't have to wait until St. David's Day, and here's the perfect thing to read at Christmas, A Child's Christmas In Wales by Dylan Thomas.

Re: ANYONE INTERESTED IN A WELSH THROW?

Perfect, Noel7--  I think I even heard a recording, years ago, of Dylan Thomas himself reading this work aloud.  So touching and evocative of his childhood...
