Thank you for the excellent suggestions.

We have an older, two story colonial home.  So no walk-in closets.  Now that we are retired and kiddos very long gone, we each have two good sized closets for our use.

We have way too much and are actively donating.  I have tried to separate my pants into black and navy areas.  Dark navy can be selected for black when in a hurry or at night.

Since I have more black than navy, to keep the colors easy to identify, I put a brass safety pin on the brand tag of the navy; on a tee in the back of the neck so it doesn't show.

*Sorry I wasn't clear.

Re: AARP closet organizing trick

I've always color coded my closet.  And Buffalo check?  Well, I have black and white bc and red and black bc.  Black and white goes at the end of items that are black.  Red and black goes in the red section - LOL.  Anyway, I do solids first and then prints according to shade of the color.  So yes, all the solid green tops are together and prints follow according to the amount of green in the top.  I like organization and I guess that's one way it plays out in my life.  Call me weird, but it gives me satisfaction.  Smiley Happy

Re: AARP closet organizing trick

I have a large walk-in closet designed by California Closets.  My tees are organized by color and sleeve length.

My jeans are organized by color and style.  Capris and shorts have their own spot as well as blouses and jackets.  I try to keep on top of things so I can find what I want.

I have shelves and cubbies for shoes, sweaters and handbags.

I mostly wear the same items over and over since I am retired and mostly hang out at home.

I have black and indigo blue (navy) slacks also. I use narrow ribbon tied on the hanger top to show the different colors. My black slacks identified with white ribbon with black stars and the navy with any navy design like stripes, plaid, checks, etc. Joanne stores or Hobby Lobby have a variety to choose from. Makes for quick decisions.

Re: AARP closet organizing trick

My main category is type rather than color.  Knit shirts--long sleeved knit shirts go together, short sleeved knit shirts; button down shirts; fleece, etc.

Pants by size and then type: jeans, chinos, crops etc.  I have two sizes of pants, some three because of the variations.

I go to the category I want to wear then think about color, where they are arranged by color.  To me that is the most efficient way to categorize a closet.

Not a big deal for me, since I have so few clothes on hangers.  Have never had great interest in clothing; just have enough for my basic needs, same with shoes.

Re: AARP closet organizing trick

I have more black clothing than navy, so I have the black slacks on white hangers and navy on colored hangers, so that when I am in a rush, I can determine black versus navy.  Seems to help me, anyway!

Re: AARP closet organizing trick

I've been organizing my closet by colors for several years now and as far as multi colored tops go I put them with the color that's the most prominent for example if I have more black tops and I have a top that's mainly black but might have a little white in it I put it with the black tops etc. I have so many tops (probably over 50) that I bought the hangers that have a hook at the middle of the hanger that allows for a second top to be attached to one hanger. (I'm putting shopping on pause )Woman LOL

I've arranged my closet by colors for years.  I have 3 walk-in closets.  I have way too many clothes.  I ran across an article about getting rid of clothing.  You hang your hangers in the opposite direction. If you wear an item hang it back up in the normal position.  At the end of a season any clothing that it still hanging in the opposite direction is something you haven't worn all season.  Time to get rid of it.

I have clothes I haven't worn since retiring and moving from Philly to Santa Fe.  Guess it's time, huh?

I do arrange by color too - easier to find things!
