A case for early holiday decorating.

Putting Your Holiday Decorations Up Early Could Make You Happier, According to Experts

If you're one of the people who believes Christmas shouldn't show up until after Thanksgiving, here's a case for setting up your tree and lights as early as possible: It could make you happier. And since there's no such thing as being too happy, everyone should listen up.

"In a world full of stress and anxiety, people like to associate to things that make them happy and Christmas decorations evoke those strong feelings of the childhood, psychoanalyst Steve McKeown told Unilad. "Decorations are simply an anchor or pathway to those old childhood magical emotions of excitement. So putting up those Christmas decorations early extends the excitement!"

Another perk of putting up your decorations: It could help you make friends. The Journal of Environmental Psychology found that decorations show your neighbors you're accessible and people perceive people with holiday decor to be more friendly and cohesive. So if you're new to the block or haven't been able to break the ice with the new family across the street, it might be time to bust out the garland and red bows.

Psychotherapist and author of 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't, Amy Morin, also told Unilad that the nostalgia the holidays trigger can provide positivity in one's life as well. "Nostalgia helps link people to their personal past and it helps people understand their identity. For many, putting up Christmas decorations early is a way for them to reconnect with their childhoods."

She says even if someone has lost a loved one, the holidays can help serve as a reminder of happy times with that person. "Decorating early may help them feel more connected with that individual," she says. So instead of shaming someone for putting up their tree the day after Halloween, or forcing yourself to resist doing the same, you might as well put this theory to the test. We know we're going to.

Re: A case for early holiday decorating.

My sister does this.

She decorates before Thanksgiving every year as her thing.  Trees even in her kids' rooms.

Good to know she is a happier person for it.  For me, it would drive me crazy knowing all the work I have coming to put it all back.

@Laura14 I'm with you! I don't do a tremendous amount of Christmas decorating, but as much as I like setting it all out and looking at it for awhile, I hate putting it away. Mine doesn't go up until after Thanksgiving, and usually comes down the weekend after New Year's...and that's long enough for me.

I do, however, enjoy looking at other peoples' decorations, so y'all go right ahead!

It may change my mood & make me happier but it would not last long. LOL!!!

With all the decorations it takes more time to clean. I don't want any time added to my cleaning schedule.

@house_cat  What on earth is in that fireplace burning?  It's a pretty scene but the week of Thanksgiving would be the earliest for me.  When I was a kid, we decorated a week before Christmas always with a real tree and kept it up until 3 Kings.  HeartCat Very Happy

@vermint  I think I am down to a nativity scene and an advent wreath.  The actual tree only comes out every other year if and when I am feeling frisky.  LOL

@Laura14 I always do my nativity scene, too, on the mantel with some flameless candles...and so far, always my tree (it's just a 6 ft., and I don't load it down with stuff). As long as I have those two things, anything else I put out is a bonus!

Re: A case for early holiday decorating.

If people want to keep their Christmas decorations up 365 days a year, it's ok with me.  Most people do it because that's where the retailers lead them so that's where they go.  No one needs an excuse and I'm not buying all, whoever wrote that is trying too hard. I just know that for me, decorating too early or thinking about Christmas when it's 98 degrees on an August day would diminish Christmas for me.  It would be like having birthday cake every night for dessert.  Sure, I'd still like  and enjoy it but it would not be special anymore.  I wouldn't look foward to it.  Also, while Christmas is my favorite time of the year....it's not the shebang...lol   There's a lot of joy, happiness and fun throughout the whole year and I want to experience it all,  as it comes.  I'm getting ready to decorate Fall now, the placemats and throw pillows arrived this morning.  I polished up my lanterns last night.   I've been looking for ideas for Fall on Pinterest.  I wouldn't want to givve that up.

Re: A case for early holiday decorating.

These days, I do like to do the tree the 1st weekend of the week BEFORE Thanksgiving  week actually arrives, sometimes I make it, sometimes no ... then, it goes up during the week right after. For a few years my kids would put it up and decorate it themselves the day after Thanksgiving also, but that has not happened in quite a few years.

To me the holiday season is from the week before Thanksgiving week to the 28th of December. I like the tree down before New Year’s Eve day, again... if possible... if I do not take it down by then ... well I am known to kind of just keep putting it off (and off) - not a good way to try to start a new year...

Back when my kids helped me with the tree, it always went up first thing on Friday after Thanksgiving. Friday was decorating day and Saturday was Christmas shopping. Or, completely vise versa - all good whichever way! Sooo much fun!

And I totally agree, holiday decorating does make you happy! 🙂

Re: A case for early holiday decorating.

A few years ago my hubby suddenly became very ill and nearly died, early November if I remember correctly. I was very stressed for a while. When he came home from the hospital I decided that Christmas was going to be big and fun, more so than usual. I got to work preparing (it IS a lot of work), sent invitations for a couple different holiday events, and busy decorating. I decorated early, before Thanksgiving, and started baking, making snacks and goodies. Planned menus, shopped and it all went off without a hitch. Everyone, myself and hubby included enjoyed it all. I think that has been about 5 years ago and he'll still here, lol, thank goodness, but I agree, sometimes you just need to get your holiday "on".
