Thanksgiving is not my favorite meal to cook or eat but if you do not have the basics people complain.  I do fresh yams and fresh green beans but no green bean casserole or yams with marshmallows on them.  I always hope I do not have a pile of leftovers.  All I want is one turkey sandwich with Best Foods mayo!

I'm not a big Thanksgiving meal either.  Turkey is not my favorite meat and I take a teeny, tiny piece just to say I had some.  I will eat the mashed potatoes, stuffing and salad.  I hate the green bean casserole and I don't like the sweet potatoe casserole either with the marshmellows.

Sort of Traditional.  We do a healthier version than past generations.  I enjoy the meal, it's my favorite of the holidays.

Traditional--We host Thanksgiving for DH's family, mine and sometimes have some friends there, too. Last year there were only 8 of us, but sometimes we've had 25. I do the turkey(s), dressing (1 plain, 1 w/sausage, 1 vegetarian for a BIL), gravy (1 regular, 1 small veggie for BIL), a small green bean casserole--DH likes it--and provide bread & pumpkin pie and cranberry sauce. Other sides are whatever everyone else wants to bring. If anyone leaves hungy, it's their own fault!

Re: Thanksgiving Dinner...Traditional or With a Twist?

Our house is a mix. Yes to turkey, mashed or potato gratin, homemade dinner rolls, dressing made completely from sctrach including the breads ( which I change a little each year), homemade cranberry sauce and some sort of sweet potatoes.

We never have green bean casserole or that mashed potato casserole thing.

I change up the desserts, we finally got sick of pumpkin pie so sometimes I make pecan pie, or pumpkin cheesecake or apple pie.

I also change up the other side dishes, I've done caramelized shallots, potato and mushroom gratin, sauteed mushrooms, salad, brussel sprouts ect. I try to find some non starchy vegetable sides to balance the meal.

The last several years our family has met at a local Casino for their buffet.  It is wonderful.

This year we are going to have TG at my daughter's house.  She decided she wanted to have it. It will be traditional.   Everyone brings something so that all the burden is not on her.

I remember years ago when my MIL invited us to TG at her house.  My kids were little.  My son was so mad when we got there and saw she was having chili.  He loved turkey and hated chili.  I had to whisper to him to act nice and I would fix turkey at home that same week.  He didn't cry but he almost did.  Keep in mind he wasn't very old.  LOL

We're going to stay with Trader Joe's Brined and Kosher Turkey with dressing and gravy.

For other courses, we're going with:

Appetizer:  Phyllo Crab Cups

With Turkey:  Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Pomegranate and Parmesan Cheese, Garlic & Herbed Cheese Mashed Potatoes

Dessert:  Pear & Pistachio Strudel and Pumpkin Pie

Hate to hear TG called Turkey Day . I think it is a special day and can be celebrated by all.  No need to worry about being political correct.

Re: Thanksgiving Dinner...Traditional or With a Twist?

Well there has been a holiday revolt and it looks like I will be cooking Thanksgiving this year.(went to my Mom's last year and clearly everyone was unhappy) My Mom doesn't know this yet. Not looking forward to that call.

Anyway, it will be traditional for us. Same stuff that we always have(except last year) our sides have to be spinach pies, pierogi potatoes, creamed onions and homemade rolls. I should probably make those soon and freeze the dough.

Re: Thanksgiving Dinner...Traditional or With a Twist?

Traditional with some family favorites.  I do a buffet and along with the turkey and stuffing etc  etc; I serve a spiral ham.  I make big pan of baked macaroni and cheese.  This year, I want to do a big pan of roasted vegetables.  I need a good recipe.
