Right up the hill from my DH's family plot is there is a grave of a civil war soldier. He was 16. It breaks my heart every time I see it. His family put a nice epithet (sp?) I'm sure his mother was heartbroken by this.

@meallen616  Not all heros die though. Someone can do something incredibly brave and survive it. My father got a silver star in WWll for jumping on a german grenade to save the lives of a family of civilians.By some miracle - he survived.He had terrible injuries but he did not die. He was definitely a hero.

There are lots of soldiers who do very brave things and earn medals , but don't die.
