Do You Have Your New Years Day Menu?

I'll be doing our traditional meal.

Herb rubbed pork loin roast-health

Fresh collards cooked with a ham bone-dollars you'll make               in the new year.

Black eyed peas.  Coin you'll make in the new year.

Kahlua candied yams-health

Corn bread

Probably cake for dessert.

(I get 2 pork loins tied together, and oven roast on 325, uncovered.

The rub is 2 Tbsp each of garlic, salt, marjoram, and sage.  Really cover the roast, making extra if needed.

We keep this mixture in a shaker for grilled pork loin chops.  It is amazingly delicious!

Just me ..... depends on what I feel like eating when I get up on Saturday morning.

I have on hand ingredients for chili, or curried vegetables, or sausage/sauerkraut/noodles.

Historically - my mother always did a pork roast w/sauerkraut for New Year's day dinner.

@ECBG  You captured many of the good luck foods with witch I am familiar.   I dont eat pork but your herbs and spices would seem to enhance the meat with a savory tast.  I will cook greens either a mixture of turnips, spinach and mustards with the turnip bottoms or collards.  Either will be seasoned with salt, red pepper, and a small amount of smoked turkey,  I may cook hoppin john or red beans and rice along with a winter salad. Seafood dish or  chicken will serve as my protein.  My dessert is a coconut cake with cream cheese frosting that I ordered from Ina Garten through Gold Belly.  I may just order Chinese food and not think about the cooking.

How do you prepare the Kahlua sweert potatoes?  That sounds fantastic.

@Zernia Rose

Your post sounded great (although, I can't tolerate hot) but my answer to your question is yes.

I am a Southern cook and just put a touch of sugar in collards (as an accent) and end up with goya pork seasoning.

I never liked the texture of dried beans since I was a child.  My younger loved split pea soup with a ham bone, I was miserable.

Although, I taught Foods and Nutrition, as well as Food Science (my minor was chemistry), the others in my dept wanted to eat all of the time so I was able to pull all of the Interior Design classes and creative classes which are my love.

I was the only "healthy" cook.

Kahlua Candied yams

Wash and boil baseball sized sweet potatoes if possible in skin.

I do 1 per person to create leftovers after a day of cooking!

Cook only until barely fork tender.

In deep skillet melt:

1 stick butter

1 C dark brown sugar

Bring to a boil and add 1 C kahlua (increase slightly for more sweet potatoes)

Holding in a clean mitt, peel potatoes and drop rounds into syrup (don't get burned)

Cover with syrup and simmer very low about 10 minutes.

Reheats wonderfully!!!!

I am making a big pot of pork braciole, italian sausage, & some meatballs.  Salad, garlic bread and some Wegman's Italian Cannolis for dessert.  Just

feels right for us after all the ham & turkey holiday meals.

Whatever you're having, enjoy !!
