Re: Do You Decorate The Entire House For The Holidays?

We just moved into our new home a few months ago, so this is my first Christmas here to decorate.  Our house is larger than our old home, so I have more space to think about.  However, I decided not to overdo anything, as I don't want to have to worry about cleaning it all up and storing it away for the next year!

I decorated this weekend.  I did the living room, dining room, a very little bit in the kitchen, and then somewhat in the girls' playroom.  Their playroom is at the back of the house and there are tons of windows overlooking the backyard.  I made it very child-friendly and easy to remove. We put up some winter window clings and taped some pictures of Santa, elves, reindeer, etc. to the windows as well.  Easy on, Easy off!

I put a touch wherever it seems to fit.  I like to use the existing things and colors to let them "become" Christmas.  I keep Christmas trees out the year round.

I'm fortunate to be able to store things both in the house and the garage with a minimum disruption to everyday things.

I don't decorate the bedrooms or the bathrooms.

I decorate the family room, kitchen, and living room.  I also put garland and some other decorative pieces in my front hall/entry way.

Every surface and every room does not have to be decorated for Christmas.  That would be too much for me...

I decorate a large portion of the house both inside and outside.  Outside is mostly the front porch with a few lights in the front flower bed.  Inside - basement rec room and shelf heading down there, living room is more collectible oranments on the tree, kitchen is all gingerbread, guest bathroom is some smaller pieces mainly white and cardinals, master bedroom is mostly vintage and red and white themed, laundry room shelf is gold and soft whites, entryway, stairwell heading upstairs is small Santa themed tree, upstairs landing is Woodland, two bedrooms upstairs have small trees.  Christmas is a special time of year for me.  I look forward to decorating.

I did my decorating yesterday.  I decorate in the great room, kitchen & foyer.  I also put a few small things in the half bath off the foyer.  It looks so nice and festive.  It's perfect with all the snow we got lastnight and today!

Re: Do You Decorate The Entire House For The Holidays?

Not anymore! I went back to simple decorating and it gives me peace.  Hemlock garland and Luminara votives for the mantle,  German Christmas tree comes out of the box and add candles (won't burn them) to the holders and put on hearth, for the family room. I have the dinette set we eat at in there so I use holiday placemats with a Nachtmann red bird candy dish in the middle.  This year, I have a few things for my husbands reading chair and table.

I buy a fresh wreath in Dec for the front door, just a plain green one. Luminara tapers go in the front windows this week.  That's it.

I don't decorate upstairs or the basement rooms, the kitchen and the dining room.

@lucymo I can't take any credit for it!  I just show up just like I did when my husband was alive.  I wouldn't know where to start!  Ha!

My daughters (especially my oldest daughter) is the planner.  I said, "I do not drive in the dark so you guys have fun at the party".  My daughter said, "Mom!  It's taken care of.  We are sending a limo for you and your friends so don't worry".  Ha!  That's the way it works in our family.  When I went to Florida my oldest daughter coorinate it with the youngest and one bought my ticket and got me to the airport and the other (from Colorado) got the hotel reservations for the two of us and met me in Florida.

They learned from their Dad (don't let mom make them or they won't get done).  Ha!  We traveled all over Europe for a month and I showed up....they planned it and that worked for me.  So, I guess they're just used to it.

I'll loan you my kids.  I guarantee they'll organize you and your family so all you need to do is show up like me.  Ha!  It works well for us.  In every family there's usually a planner who likes being the boss.  I happen to have 3 daughters who defer to the oldest (43, 41 and 36), they are the total opposite of their scatter brained mom.  Ha!

@Annabellethecat66  You are one lucky lady and reading your post, you know it and appreciate what the girls do for you.

You can take some of the credit for helping to raise these  wonderful girls. It sounds like you did a great job and they are taking care of you now.  Enjoy just showing up.  lol

Re: Do You Decorate The Entire House For The Holidays?

@lucymo I know I'm lucky but I'd go back in a minute to have my husband back.  No one has a perfect life (if they say they do, they're lying).  Right?  I do appreciate what my girls do for me.  I wish the younger one lived near me because it's hard for the oldest because she has 4 young children and stays busy.

They've had a very easy life (like we planned) but the beauty is they realize how lucky they are.  I'm a stickler for thank you notes and every time I do something nice for them or their children, the children (in their handwriting) write out a thank you note.  People don't do that much anymore.  I don't believe in excuses.

I often think I wish I lived near some of you.  You guys (some/most) are so sweet.  I think we'd have fun out together once or twice a month, stretching each other's brains.

Re: Do You Decorate The Entire House For The Holidays?

@Annabellethecat66 Happy Birthday in Advance!!!

As for holiday decorating, the only outside decor is a front door wreath.  Indoors, I do a little something in every room, like candles or a little holiday arrangement.  We don't put up a tree because we spend Christmas with my parents and all of our gifts are at their house.  Most of my indoor holiday decor is in the living room.  We don't even have a mantel, but there's room on the fireplace surround to hang garland.  Some years, we set up our Department 56 collection, but this won't be one of those years.

I hope posters will share pictures of some of their decorations once they are complete.

Re: Do You Decorate The Entire House For The Holidays?

We decorate the front door with wreath and planters with wreaths. We also have the Bliss Light in our yard, love it.  We decorate every room with touches of holiday for every holiday/season.  It make our home feel good to us and visitors.
