What I actually used to chain down the Desert Steel pumpkin is a vinyl-coated steel wire cable with a padlock.  The wire cable is thin enough to pass thru the small openings in the pumpkin. It was barely noticeable, gave me peace-of-mind and it did the job!

Not really worried about anyone taking them ... even the kids don't seem to touch decorations on our porch ...but we have had some bad wind storms this past spring and summer, so I just wouldn't want to take the chance.

I do lights in the windows for Halloween and Christmas .... and two trees in urns flock the front door.  Even the wreath on the front door is behind the storm door... ha... so everything is safe.
