What every happened to Shoe Repair

Years ago you could go to the shoe repair man for new heels on your shoes and even soles.  What happens now - --   if they are in bad condition you end up throwing away.  It is so sad that this craft is nonexistent in my area.  Do you still know a shoe repair store?  Cat Happy

There is one shoe repair shop in the next town to me.  In Philly (downtown) there are still shoe shine "spots."   Both are dying occupations.

Haven't seen a shoe repair shop for years.  Shoes are just like everything else today.........Planned obsolescence.

We don't have any shoe repair shops near me.  The last guy I found was 30 miles away and he retired shortly after I discovered him.  It is a lost art but also, modern shoes even ones that a very expensive aren't all leather which means that sometimes they cannot be repaired.

I still take my shoes in to be repaired!  There are two shoe repair shops within walking distance.

When I worked downtown - there was one around the corner from my office.

I've had shoes repaired at all three places ... and a strap resewn on my Kenneth Cole tote (that's about 25 year old!).

We have one in my town, it's a small hole in wall place...they repair everything leather too & do excellent work. I'm taking my Clark's Sixty Cruise shoes in for a strap repair, love those discontinued shoes & don't want to throw them away.

Re: What every happened to Shoe Repair

I think there is still a shoe repair shop in my LI town, but note that I said "I think"  I don't know because it's been at least 30 years since I walked in and used the services.  Not sure how unusual I am, but if most are like me, I can't see how they pay their rent let alone buy food!

I know for sure there was a shop in my Florida neighborhood until a few years back.  Although they offered repair services on handbags as well as shoes and sold some odds and ends, they went out of business during the downturn of 10 years ago.  I wouldn't have the slightest idea where to go with a problem now.

We still have two in the area and two retail shoe stores that will repair shoes bought there, though I think they send them out to be repaired. It frustrates me that the shoes today are made so that they really cannot be repaired.

Re: What every happened to Shoe Repair

Last year my 91 year old mother wanted her purse repaired.  I searched online, but not one leather or shoe repair place was listed within my large county.  Over a few weeks I drove to the location of old shoe repair shops, but they all were gone.  When I got my hair cut a month later, I asked my stylist.  She directed me to an older man ( not far from my home) who repaired the purse.  He says he does not advertise because he has clients from out of state who send all kinds of leather items to be repaired and could not handle any more business.  Alas! A dying skill/ art.

Re: What every happened to Shoe Repair

We have a shoe repair shop nearby.  I have used him and he seems to do a good business.  One half of the store is shoe repair and in the other half they sell shoes.  They have a lot of Vionic, and a few other brands, primarily comfort shoes.
