Also, something to think about are purse scarves (Brighton or Etsy) to change the look of a basic purse.  You can do hearts (for Valentines) or seasonal holiday looks too without a lot of effort. Good when traveling to change the look without changing the bag.

Have a black leather bag for the Winter and switch out during the Spring/Summer with my Brighton Copa Cabana (pecan gold color) that I've had for at least five years and still adore although it's showing wear now.  Evening bags I do own, but now never use.
