the use of epsom salts in gardening

I've got some laying around that I'll never use so I thought I'd try it. I did an internet search and the consensus of opinion is that long-time gardeners swear by the stuff, especially for roses, but there's no scientific evidence that it works. On the other hand,f I read something that is true: science sometimes lags behind folk lore.

Does anyone use this stuff? What is your experience? Can anyone offer any advice or thoughts? I'd sure like to hear from yoou.
