need advice on 'building raised beds'

Hi , we have very poor soil , and this year I was thinking of having dh build some raised beds (with wood), then I went on Martha Stewart website and she advised just to 'raise the bed' by putting the path soil (between rows) into the vegetable beds, so in affect raising it.

Which is better , baring in mind I have a lot of clayiy soil that I have tried to ammnd in the past with compost, but it seem have 'disappeared', thanks
