Or how about rocks with some moss added between the rocks?  I was going ot suggest a solar light as well but sounds like maybe you don't get enough sun.

What planting zone are you in? Or are you thinking annuals?

 

If you want to go plantless different color of stones can imitate movement, perhaps adding a small fountain and a few architectural pieces can be lovely.
