Wow, you really DO know about rhodies! (said with admiration and respect)

 

 One of the reasons they're so abundant here is that we have volcanic soil (much clay and very rocky) that is so acid that you almost don't have to add any unless you want a really big/colorful rhodie; the same is true for azaleas (aren't they related to rhododenrons?)

 

What's the soil like in PA? I have relatives living there and this might give me an excuse to barge in on them Woman Wink

@FuzzyFace All azaleas are rhododendrons, & all rhododendrons are not azaleas. 

 

In PA and areas east of the Mississippi River, soils are acidic. West of the Mississippi most soils are alkalinic. 

 

I have one rhododendron on my property; a small shrub called ‘Yaku Prince’.
