Like others have said, ITA that it's from grackles!
Two years ago, I actually saw a grackle behead a fledgling sparrow, & it was awful! It had grabbed the baby, and started walking while clutching it in his claw....and then,...
I was shouting at it the whole time, and about 10 sparrows were flying all around the grackle, though it ignored them all, & me as well.
After that, I googled it, and it corroborated what I'd seen.
Grackles DO behead smaller birds.

p.s. Where I live, grackles are also called 'devil birds'.
