@Lilysmom  Here's good information about shredders - it's from last week's public radio program You Bet Your Garden (which I recommend! it's about organic gardening).  Scroll down to the second question on the page, though the first question on composting is also good.

Shredding Leaves

I used to order Safer products from Gardens Alive, @ValuSkr.  It seems they've stopped carrying the brand.  I still use the BT dust for my geraniums.  It's getting harder to find since stores seem to want to sell the kind you mix.  I just like the dust.

Re: Using leaves as garden mulch

We've done this for years in areas where I want a to have a flower or veggie garden.  Our soil is clay based and pretty crummy.  If I could start all over again I would have huge planter gardens or raised gardens but I'm not starting that project. This works but it requires patience.  It took three years for the soil to get "right" for our veggie garden but it was worth it.  We have a ton of leaves and trees so it helped with the number of bags that were sitting at the curb.

@GingerPeach@Fressa@ValuSkr, thanks for the additional info.  We are in the middle of our second snow storm this winter (both in this week) and there are still leaves on the oak trees!  LM

I always thought you should not do this as the leaves are acidic - am I incorrect in this?

Oak leaves are generally acidic. Not sure if other trees' leaves are the same.

The mulch helps keep plants warm in the winter and as they break down, provides nutrients to these plants.

Its a tri - fold method-- block weeds, keep plants warm and provide food slowly to the plants.
