The best lawn edger for the money?

My husband wants to buy a lawn edger, and share the cost with our son. Does anyone know of a good edger with a good track record for repair? The last thing we need is another piece of equipment that is fraught with problems. I am thinking he would like a gas powered one. Thank you!

Have you checked Consumer Reports? Their end of the year soft cover book contains everything they have reviewed giving the pros and cons of various items they have tested.

String trimmers Another article from that site.

I have a Black and Decker weed wacker/edger and it works great. It's not top of the line, but it does everything I need it to do. It was around $75 at the home depot. It does a good job. The only downfall is it's about 6 years old and the battery life dwindled. I can go about 20 minutes per charge. It was longer when it was new. I think they've since changed the battery.

Thanks everyone. Maybe I am calling it the wrong thing. He wants the one that runs on wheels, you push it; that has a blade that does the cutting. We already have a string one.

Re: The best lawn edger for the money?

I understood that you were talking about an edger that has wheels. I bought a rather expensive one of those that was gas powered and I hated it. I have Bermuda grass in some places which is really tough and I thought a powerful gas powered one would do the trick. Not so...it made a terrible mess because it digs and yet the bermuda grass did not get cut off.

Last year I purchased a Black and Decker string trimmer with a lithium battery. The head turns easily from a trimmer to an edger and surprisingly this thing does the most amazing edge trimming ever. It is really powerful and cuts that bermuda grass right off and also digs a trench in the dirt. I purchased an extra battery because I have a lot of frontage and lots of beds to trim. The battery keeps it's power right up until it's out of juice. The replacement heads, which come wrapped with new string are rather expensive, so I kept the empty spools and restrung them myself.

I just used it for the first time since last year and said to myself that I love this thing. The battery also fits their hedge trimmer, so I bought that too. Really so surprised that the trimmer is so powerful using a battery.
