Much to my distress a bird flew into my kitchen window the other day, and died.

When DH went to bury it, he said I ought to see it.

I can't identify it from any of my sources. The description?

White bill, shaped like a grosbeak bill or perhaps a cardinal bill.

Bright red around the face.

Tail feathers dark and iridescent striped.

About the size of a cardinal.

Any idea?

Yes, but my husband the attending avian mortician thinks the darker iridescent feathers were more prominent than in this picture. I sure would serve gourmet seed to coax this guy to our feeders though. Beautiful!

If you're comfortable telling, what state are you in?

What a beautiful bird.  Looks like something MacKenzie-Childs would  dream up.

NJ, And we have a really lovely one acre yard that draws the most wonderful birds and animals.

I live in NJ also and have one and a third acres.  I haven't seen that species of bird - it's lovely. What type of bird seed do you use?

Also if anyone has any suggestions on type of bird feeders that are low enough to enjoy outside a window but tall enough to deter squirrels and deer.
