The Great Backyard Bird Count

Every year I tend to get busy and miss this fun opportunity. I'll not miss it this year.

From the Cornell Lab of Ornithology:

Join the Great Backyard Bird Count

We share the planet with birds, and the GBBC is a great opportunity to get out and show them some love. Join us next weekend (February 17–20) when the world comes together to appreciate nature and the birds that surround us—while helping scientists better understand and protect them. Get connected and ready for the count!

Live Q&A Webinar: Join bird experts from around the world for a live Q&A about the GBBC and anything else related to birds and birding. Wednesday, February 15, 2023. 1:00–2:00pm ET.

@PA Mom-mom , DH heard this fella yesterday.  There are many pileated woodpeckers in our neighbourhood.  This guy was rat a tat tating on the power pole.  Quite a racket. They love dead trees.  LM

@Lilysmom1  He is a handsome fellow! I haven't seen any pileated woodpeckers in our back yard, but I did see one in Sanibel, FL a few years ago. We do have other woodpeckers, however; and, I always worry if any of our trees are in trouble when I hear or see them.

Re: The Great Backyard Bird Count

I finished the bird count this morning. A very strange weekend! We normally get dozens of birds at our backyard feeders, but on Friday and Saturday we got just a few cardinals and downy woodpeckers. I felt silly even reporting them, but I did anyway. Then, on Sunday morning, we got tons of juncos, wrens, sparrows, cardinals, etc. We even got a female bluebird! Today we also got the male bluebird! I sure hope those bluebirds are house hunting and decide to stay!

@Skyegirl21 Were you able to do the "count?"

Did anyone else do the count?

Re: The Great Backyard Bird Count

I love them, but the red hail hawks are terrorizing the birds at my feeders.  Yesterday my husband saw a hawk capture a small bird (he did not identify it) and take off.  I guess that was lunch for the hawk.  So, our counts would be skewed.  We did not participate.

@maximillian That's too bad, and so sad! The realities of wildlife. We get them once in a great while. In fact, I thought that could be why my birds didn't show up for a few days. Well, maybe next year.

ETA: On second thought maybe you should have reported the hawk. They would want to know that too
