Stock Flowers

Can anyone tell me - in an idiot proof manner - how to deadhead stock? All my blossoms have died off already and I want to encourage new blossoms. I've looked up every article I can find and I STILL can't figure it out. Some say cut off the spent stalk to the base of the plant, some say pull off the flower and leave the stalk. If cut off all the stalks down to the base, it will be the end of summer before I get any more flowers - i'll have a garden of leaves. H E L P!!!!!!
